Alot of times what happens when you turn the key the pin that locks the steering wheel and also allows the shiftet arm to move doesn't always dis-ingage. if you can do this yourself dis-assembly of the steering column is not difficult, however if you have a driverside airbag be etremely careful you can set it off with a static charge. if you feel uncomfortable doing this take it to a small independant shop where labor cost is minimal. dealships are quite pricey these days.

Does anybody know the step by step directions for how to replace the column shift selector lever plunger and the transmission column shift selector tube on a 2004 lincoln town car?

Not hard to replace. But you can't buy them., unless you get the entire steering column. Just did a Ford, same set up. Junk yard part is cheaper.

Gear shift stick is loose from the steering column. It will not shift out of park. What do I need to look to repair?

It has a safety system that keeps it locked in Park unless your foot is on the brake. If the brake lever switch is broke or out of place it will not shift. Someone could have bent the parts when it did not unlock. Check rear brakelights to see if you get it to light when a foot is on brakepedal.

Gear shift if difficult to shift from park to reverse or drive.

Your Gear Shift Rod Cylender Tube is cracked or broken. Will have to drop your steering wheel colum to replace. This is common. Ford has modified the new tubs.

Where is the shift lock actuator located on my 1994 lincoln town car

located on column under dash left side of steering shaft. its easier to remove the plastic around the column and drop the four mounting nuts that hold the column up, then its easy to access

I have a problem. I have a 94 lincoln. It wont go into gear. The automatic gear shift drops all the way down with no shifting

Most likely, either the shift tube is damaged/broken or the screws have backed out of the lever at the end of the shift tube that the shift cable connects to. If the shift lever feels really "floppy", then you probably have a broken shift tube. You will probably have to pull the steering column down to get a good look at the shift tube to see if it is broken and to see how much play is in the shift tube bushings. Also look to see if the lever at the end of the shift tube is loose (shift cable lever).

A little word of caution: If you take the steering column down, be sure to disconnect the shift indicator cable first so it does not get broken. There is a tiny screw in the plastic braket that must be removed then the cable loop will simply slip off of the nipple on the shift tube arm.

Anyway, you will need a T-30 torx bit to work on the shift tube, the shift tube bushings and the lever at the end of the shift tube.

I made you a graphic below to help you understand what I am saying. Please note that it is NOT necessary to remove the steering wheel to do this, but you will need to remove the upper steering column shrouds if the shift tube bushings are loose.
