Question about Honda Prelude

1 Answer

Starter motor died in my 1990 prelude and was wondering if anyone knows how to recondition them yourself opposed to purchasing a recon from a shop? It just sits there and clicks but this is after I have just had the classic regulator problem and the car conking out all the time so not 100% it's the starter motor - any ideas?

Yes,
Take the starter motor off, and take it to your local big chain auto parts store to have them test it. This is usually a no cost test.
That will determine if it is the starter or possibly a different problem.

do a compression test on all four cylinder to see if it has low compression. you may have a blown head gasket or burnt valve.

Where is the selinoid located (cyllinoid?) in a 1990 Honda Prelude SI?

The solenoid is on or in the starter depending on if the car has a mitsuba or a nippondeso starter. The mitsuba has to be replaced, the nippo can be repaired with a new set of contacts and a plunger. They are both located on the passenger side and can be found by following the positive cable to the starter.

I have a 1998 honda prelude h22 vetc automatic with 178K the motor runs fine but the transmisson when i put it in reverse i knocks the it will do fine threw first kinda slip in second and then not go into...

Definitely change the transmission oil - could be some rubbish in there stopping the actuators working correctly. If that doesn't work, could be time for rebuild with new friction material in the clutches.

try over riding the starter relay on the fender ,it has one there right?. dont go to a mechanic yet. the engine aint seized. if it doesnt have this relay then i would get the alternator tested. if you want to test it yourself it can be costly for the right equip. autozone usually tests for free. i dont know were you live so if theres not an autozone. let me know if you cant get it tested.
