Question about 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan

Transmission I just had my van scanned and the readings showed are code 40 & code 41. According to the operator the torque converter and the transmission are broken. Please assist me with your knowldge... by the way can you give me your phone number? Thank you once again

The Solenoid Switch Valve, an internal, hydraulically operated valve, controls the direction of the transmission
fluid when the LR solenoid is energized. When the solenoid switch valve is in the downshifted position and the
LR solenoid is energized, fluid is directed to the LR element for 1st gear. When the solenoid switch valve is In
the up-shifted position (2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear) and the LR solenoid is energized, fluid is directed into the
Lockup Switch Valve which controls the Torque Converter Clutch. When shifting into 1st gear, a special
sequence is followed to insure solenoid switch valve movement into the downshifted position. The LR pressure
switch is monitored to confirm switch valve movement. If the solenoid switch valve movement is not confirmed
(i.e. no LR pressure when the LR solenoid is energized), 2nd gear is substituted for 1st. No 1st gear (2nd gear is
substituted). The transmission Torque converter FEMCC operation is inhibited. MIL on after 5 min. of
substituted operation.

P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description Article by Dan Weller ASE Certified Master Technician Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. It is considered generic because it applies to all makes and models of vehicles (1996-newer), although specific repair steps may vary depending on the model. What does that mean? Modern vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions / transaxles use a torque converter between the engine and transmission to increase the engine torque output and drive the rear wheels. The engine and transmission are actually connected by a fluid coupling mechanism inside of the torque converter which is what multiplies the torque until the speeds equalize and create a "stall" speed where the difference in actual engine RPM and transmission input RPM is around 90% efficient. Torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoids commanded by the Powertrain control module/Engine control module (PCM/ECM) or the Transmission control module (TCM) to direct hydraulic fluid and engage the torque converter clutch to create a solid coupling and increase efficiency. The transmission control module has detected a fault with the circuit that operates the torque converter clutch solenoid. Note: This code is similar to codes P0740, P0742, P0743 and P0744. There may be other diagnostic trouble codes associated with the transmission control module that can only be accessed by using an advanced scan tool. If any additional transmission related DTC's appear in addition to the P0741, an electrical failure is likely. Symptoms Symptoms of a P0741 trouble code may include: Performance or Stuck Off Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated (a.k.a. Check Engine Light) Minimal decrease in fuel economy, this will not affect engine performance Potential Causes Causes of this DTC may include: Wiring harness to transmission shorted to ground Torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid internal short Transmission control module (TCM) Diagnostic Steps for P0741 DTC Wiring harness - Check transmission wiring harness for damage or loose connections. Use a factory wiring diagram to locate the appropriate power source and all connection points between circuits. The transmission may be powered by a fuse or relay, and triggered by the TCM. Disconnect the transmission harness at the transmission connector, power source and TCM. Check for a short to ground inside the transmission internal wiring harness by locating the appropriate + and - pins for the torque converter clutch solenoid. Using a digital volt ohm meter (DVOM) set to ohms scale, check for a short to ground in the circuit with the positive lead on either pin and the negative lead to a known good ground. If resistance is low, suspect a short to ground the internal harness or the TCC solenoid - removing the transmission oil pan may be necessary to further diagnose the TCC solenoid. Test the wiring between the TCM and the wiring harness connector at the transmission case using the DVOM set to ohms. Check for a possible short to ground by moving the negative lead on the DVOM to a known good ground, resistance should be very high or over limit (OL). Torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid - Check the resistance in the TCC solenoid and internal transmission wiring at the transmission case after removing the transmission harness plug (if applicable, some makes/models use a TCM bolted directly to the transmission case). Some makes/models use a transmission wire harness with the TCC solenoid and internal harness as a single unit. Using the DVOM set to ohms, check for a short to ground with the positive lead on either circit to the TCC and the negative lead on a known good ground. Resistance should be very high or over limit (OL), if it is low, suspect a short to ground. Check for voltage on the power side circuit of the TCC solenoid or at the wire harness connector at the TCM with the DVOM set to volts scale, positive lead at the wire being tested and the negative to a known good ground with the vehicles key on/engine off, battery voltage should be present. If no voltage is present, determine the loss of power back through the circuit using the manufacturers wiring diagrams for reference. Transmission control module (TCM) - Since the torque converter clutch is only activated during certain driving conditions, it will be necessary to monitor the TCM with an advanced scan tool to determine if the TCM is commanding the TCC solenoid and what the actual feedback reading is at the TCM. The TCC solenoid is normally controlled by a duty cycle to engage a more comfortable torque converter cluch engagement. To test if the TCM is actually sending the signal, a graphing multimeter set to duty cycle or a digital storage oscilloscope will be required as well. The positive lead is probed into the wiring harness plugged into the TCM and the negative lead to a known good ground. The duty cycle shold be the same as being commanded by the TCM in the advanced scan tool reading. If the cycle stays at 0% or 100% or is intermittent, re-check connections and if all wiring / solenoid is OK, the TCM may be at fault.

My 2007 dodge with 5.9 diesel is showing engine malfunction light and error code of P1740, failed TCC or overdrive solenoid. The truck seems to run ok in overdrive but I don't understand what the TCC...


Code P1740-Torque converter clutch did not lock up when the PCM sent the command. Enabling conditions: No engine or transmissions codes are present, vehicle speed was under 70 MPH, TPS was under 33% open. When the PCM commanded the torque converter to lock, no change was detected in engine speed. Blocking action: This code can block the following monitors: none.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may complain of a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination. Upon further analysis, it is determined that the MIL is caused by Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1740 - Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) or overdrive solenoid Performance. Other than the MIL, the customer may not notice any other condition with the transmission.

This condition may be caused by an intermittent and momentary TCC disengagement condition. The transmission valve body pressure boost valve cover plate has been revised with a larger size orifice hole to address this condition.

NOTE: THE DRB III(R) MUST BE OPERATING AT RELEASE LEVEL 50.4 MDS2 SYSTEM CIS CD2067 OR HIGHER (AVAILABLE THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 2, 2000) IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE REVISED TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH STALL TEST. DO NOT USE EARLIER VERSION STALL TEST TO DETERMINE CONDITION OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH.

Are there codes in the transmission computer? Likely the torque converter clutch is not disengaging or a holding member with the transmission could not be releasing. this could be caused by a faulty shift solenoid or a mechanical failure with the transmission. Check to ensure the transmission shift properly under all conditions. Also, stall test the torque converter, put it in gear hold the brakes firm and throttle the engine. Generally the torque converter will stall out around or above 2,000 rpm. If it stalls out much lower, check the torque converter clutch solenoid for proper operation.

Again, check the transmission computer for codes. You will need an advanced OBD1 scan tool which can communicate like a hikock scan tool ( ford factory for that era)

If it is like my Acura the problem was a screen that filters the fluid at the SOLENOID. They are on the outside of the transmission on my FWD and when cleaned we probably didn't need to replace the transmission. (I did anyway since I had gotten the trans.almost all of the way out of the car when I took off the solenoid to get a little more clearance). Follow all of the wiring looms to the solenoids. The torque converter lock-up solenoid pair was on the top nearest to the "bell housing" on my car.

This is a transmission code associated with the torque converter inside. This code shows up a lot before major transmission work is needed. Check with the dealer to see if your van falls in the tranmission extension warranty. Depending on the year and vin range, it may fall within the extension.

P0741 torque converter stuck off code - 2004 Toyota corolla


P0741 deals with internal transmission torque converter slip. A proper scan tool that is capable of reading the sensor's data inside the transmission would show the slipping torque converter and the fluid temperature.
It is critical to know exactly what conditions are present when the code stores. If the codes were not erased, they could be old codes in it's history.

Go back to the transmission shop or where you had the work done on replacing the TCC solenoid and have them read and clear the codes history. As mentioned, they could be old codes that is being read prior to your repairs.
Thank you for using Fixya and good luck, Have a shop verify line pressure, and provided no valves in the TCC hydraulic circuit are worn, replace the torque converter. Also, Lubegard Shudder Fix will at least fix this for awhile. Or try a transmission flush by a shop that uses BG brand products.

P1740 TCC O/D SOL PERFORMANCE (GAS)
Theory of Operation
The Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid is used to engage the TCC which improves fuel economy.
When Monitored
The Torque Convertor Clutch (TCC) and Overdrive Clutch (OD) will be tested each time the PCM requests TCC engagement in 3rd gear and OD.
Set Condition
The DTC will set if the expected RPM drop is not achieved while attempting to engage TCC or OD. This indicates a malfunctioning torque convertor or overdrive clutch.
