Question about 2003 Volkswagen Jetta TDI
My jetta will not go in gear, and yesterday the on and off of the car tring to get the car out of parking it died. so we thought that the alterator(sp) was the problem. but when we took it off and took it to auto zone they checked it out and they said it was good along with the battery. when we tried to put it back we can't remember how the belt went and can;t figure out what the problem is.
also one of the four wires in the box on top of the battery looks burnt would that be the problem with the going in gear problem? or could it be something else?
OK, since you haven't updated you question I'll put forth my best guess. If you have an automatic and can't get it out of park you may have a bad brake light switch. There is an interlock that moves a solenoid to release the shifter when you step on the brake pedal. If the brake switch is bad the car won't register that you are stepping on the brake and the car will stay stuck in park. A quick check is to have someone look at the back of the car when you step on the brakes. If it is a bad brake switch try stomping on it a couple of times to loosen it up. If that doesn't work you are kind of stuck, you can get it towed to the dealer or you can get a new switch and put it in yourself. There is a recall on VW brake switches since they have had so many fail so you might get towed for free if that raelly is the problem or they might give you the part for free with exchange of the old one. Who knows?
If it is more than just gettting the shifter to move on an automatic I don't recommend you work on it and you should take it to someone. Unless the fluid is empty there really isn't much that isn't very involved to fix.

I would say your gear box has had it take it in for a gear box service first
