98 lesabre grinding starter

Hi- my 98 lesabre just started making grinding noises as I start the car. Sometimes the car will start and a slight grind will be heard after teh motor is on, other times it grinds when I turn the key.

Do I need a new started or is something else wrong?

Thanks.

Most likely your bendex wheel in the starter is not engaging the flywheel this could be due to a bad solenoid on the starter. chances are it's a bad starter, i would check to make sure all connections to starter are tight and you have atleast 11.5 -12.5 volts of current in the battery. low voltage can cause this problem as well

Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

My 2002 lincoln ls makes a loud grinding noise when i first start it. Then the noise goes away. Now my car won't even start.

Hi Nancy:
The first thing that I would be suspicious of would be the starter. What happens when you try to start the car? Does the starter turn over? Is there a clicking noise? Did the car run fine after starting with the grinding noise? If it did, then the grinding was probably associated with the starter. If you pull the starter and the little gear on the pointy end is all chewed up you'll be on your way to solving the problem. If you're lucky, a rebuilt starter will probably be most cost effective and hopefully (usually) the ring gear will be OK.
Hope this helps.

Loud starter grinding noise when engine is started

I'd suggest having your flywheel checked, if it's an automatic transmission, after you get your starter checked and/or replaced.
