I am old school and they are ussuall y on top of the engine and easy to repalce in my time. The Saab folks there want 180.00 to do this. Seems way over the line. Whats involved?

That is mostly labor cost. the thermostat is only 3-5 dollars at most and to change out the thermostat takes an hour at most with replacement and coolant top off.

Overheating when airconditioner is on

The a/c is not the issue
You have the usual players
Old clogged radiator
Bad thermostat
Bad water pump
Fans that don't come on
Head gasket issues
& more
Have to check & test it all

Seems to be overheating and blowing back to header tank and out presher cap could it be thermastat

How old is the fluid, old fluid could boil at a lower temp. The cap could be bad, if it isn't sealing up correctly at the right pressure, coolant could blow by. The radiator could be clogged. The thermostat could be bad, test it by using an old pot and boiling it in water to see if it opens up.

1991 Subaru Legacy - non turbo Car runs great !! Except my daughter rear-ended another car - it seemed like it did not hurt it but now it keeps going hot. At 1st it was overheating - replaced thermostat...

When your daughter rear ended the other car, she could have caused one hose somewhere to get a kink in it. Please follow especially the pipes underneath to check for a kink. It may be a very small hose but it can cause this problem. It did it to my 1990 VW Golf GTI.

It could also be that there was a metal pipe that bent also and water is not circulating properly.

Car overheating. taken thermostat out and it fine. not sure if radiator blocked or not whats best way to clean and repair cooling system at home i have different things like stop leak (used once already)...

Not sure if I am understanding you correctly or not but if you took the thermostat out and your no longer overheating all you need to do is replace the thermostat. If you are still overheating it can be a number of different things, a blockage, cracked head, bad hose, ect.... Stop leak can causes build up in the system because it is made to clog leaks. You may need to have the system flushed by a repair shop. But the thermostat seems to be your issue.

Daughters 95 Sentra overheated this weekend. Lost a/c and cruise started to flash.... Could this be a thermostat. She said all fluids looked good and no leaks...

yes, the thermostat could be stuck closed.

I would still flush the system and install new antifreeze at least every 3 to 5 years.

Looks like this 95 Sentra needs servicing.

Good luck to you.

If the water pump is bad it will be leaking antifreeze and you will see it dripping/running on the ground. Also, when water pumps go bad they will often...but not always...make a noise...sometimes a screeching sound. You did not mention it or that the water pump is leaking so I doubt if it is the problem. The thermostat can easily be the problem and if so is a very low cost item to replace...maybe less than ten bucks including the new gasket. Your boyfriend can install a new one easily. If that does not fix the problem of overheating then there can be many other ways the engine can be overheating. Look for a leak in the radiator. You did not mention it either so maybe that is not it.
Be sure to check all the other engine fluids...low oil...if none showing on the dipstick...can cause the engine to overheat. If you have not changed the oil and filter for the engine since forever then it is possible..but not probable...that sludge has accumulated to the point in the engine that it is overheating and even possibly causing the oil pump in the oil pan area to stop pumping oil as well as it should...but I actually doubt any of these. You could also have low transmission fluid that causes it to overheat and almost being ready to lock up causing the engine to work harder and overheating. There are many many possibilities...but the thermostat is the first thing I would do to fix it and then if it still is a problem start to look at the other areas.
