Question about Ford Focus

2 Answers

CAN YOU HELP, I HAVE AN R REG MONDEO V6(NOT ON WEBSITE LIST SO PUT CHOSE MODEL AS FOCUS) WITH AUTO GEARBOX. ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO I HAD THE GREEN "O/D OFF" LAMP FLASHING WHICH INDICATES A GEARBOX FAULT. THE CAR DROVE FINE EXCEPT THERE WAS A "JOLT" BETWEEN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR WHEN CHANGING UP. ALL OTHER CHANGES UP/DOWN WERE FINE AND THE CAR PULLED AWAY SMOOTHLY IN 1ST. AFTER PARKING UP FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS THE FAULT AND LAMP FLASHING WERE STILL PRESENT, HOWEVER AFTER ABOUT 4 OR 5 MINUTES I NOTICED THE LAMP HAD GONE OUT AND THE FAULT WAS NO LONGER PRESENT, THE CAR HAS DRIVEN SMOOTHLY FOR THE LAST 1500 MILES OR SO UNTIL LAST WEEKEND WHEN ON THE MOTORWAY CRUISING STEADILY I NOTICED THE O/D LAMP FLASHING AGAIN. WHEN I EVENTUALLY LEFT THE M/WAY SOME 30 MILES ON, THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED - 1ST TO 2ND JOLT ON CHANGE UP ALL THE WAY HOME. NEXT MORNING I STARTED THE CAR, THE O/D STARTED FLASHING AGAIN, PULLED AWAY WITH THE USUAL 1 - 2 JOLT BUT WITHIN 5 MINS THE LIGHT EXTINGUISHED AND THE CAR DRIVES FINE AGAIN!! IS THIS POSSIBLY A "MAPPING" FAULT WITH THE ON BOARD COMPUTER?? FORD WANT £80 JUST TO PLUG IN THEIR TESTER AND CHECK WHAT IS LOGGED (OBVIOUSLY THEY'LL THEN TAKE ME TO THE CLEANERS AGAIN - ONCE BITTEN!!) ANY INFO / ADVICE WOULD BE MOST WELCOME. THANKS.

Chances are there is a problem with transmision control module. you can go to an independant shop and they will diagnose it for around 40- 60 dollars way cheaper than the dealership

It can be the TPS or the computer, check also transm fluid

When you have transmission problem, first thing to check is transmission fluid level, and eventually refill it.
Bad shifting problems on auto trans may also be caused by TPS. Tps stands for throttle position sensor, and it is a sensor that tells your automatic transmission module how you use the throttle.
When this is bad automatic transmission will give you troubles.
Finally another cause for the problem is the automatic transmission module (a computer) itself.
This problems can be located by connect a code reader to the car module, this job is usually done at any qualified garage for a not expensive fee.

Hi there. when jump starting a car you are supposed to put the earth lead on a metal part (engine block or gearbox) so i dont think you have done any damage..
good quality jump leads are what is needed ( thick ones)

if you have a battery charger then that would be best depending on the ampage might need charging for 24hrs at least..

The automatic gearbox on my mondeo 2002 changes gears but slips

In the engine compartment, you will need to locate the transmission dipstick. Usually on the left side of the motor, labeled "Trans fluid". Pull it out and check the fluid level. Your problem could be as simple as putting transmission fluid in it. That will make it slip. You fill the transmission right down the dipstick tube.

What gearbox - auto or stick? Have you checked the oil level of the gearbox? Have you replaced it lately - it should be replaced every 2 years for the best reliability.
