I drive a 2002 Dodge Durnago. I have recently been driving it in 4wd because of all the snow. However yesterday when I tried to switch back to 2wd it would not shift back. And when I make slow sharp turns it makes a strange grinding sound and seems like it doesnt want to move. What do I do?

Hi there, check the shift linkage on the transfer case, it has an adjustment. it might just need adjusting or it is jamed up against the tranny.

Stop the truck, put the transmission shifter in neutral, foot on the brakes, select 2Hi or 2WD and then put the truck into reverse and back up about 10 car lengths until the 4WD light goes out.

If you have push button transfer case, likely shift motor or controls. If the transfer case has a shifter, and it moves freely, likely internal problem

Stuck in 4wd lo how to get back to 4wd high

Did you try backing up straight about 50ft. then try it again. Sometimes you build up drive line strain and there is so much pressure on the gears you can't move them. Backing sometimes relieves the pressure.

4x4 shifter moves around freely with no resistance

My stepson also has a 99 grand cherokee and had the same problem they have a cable that connects the shifter to the transfer case. his problem was the cable broke. I changed it for him and works fine now but it's not easy to change so do not try to change it yourself unless you know what your doing.

I just bought a 2001 blazer 4.3 4wd and it was stuck in 4 low

It should tell you on the Shifter whether or not that you can Shift on the Fly. Check the Manual first if there is one in the Truck. Some Models had this and some Did not. Was an Extra from Factory Option.

Can't transfer to 4L or neutral mode

Transfer cases can be quirky. I've got a 91 Wrangler, an 86 Cherokee and a 75 Blazer. When I go from 2WD to 4WD, they each have their own personality.

There are a number of things I've learned to persuade a stubborn xfer case to shift.

Try mixing these :
  • Engine running, vehicle not moving
  • Engine off, Shift Xfer case, Restart
  • Tranny in neutral
  • Shift Xfer case 'N', Tranny in gear, Tranny in neutral, Xfer case to 4HI or 4LOW (as long as you feel it register), Tranny in gear, try to move
  • Shift Tranny to Reverse, roll a few yards
  • Lock/Unlock the Hubs
To get back to 2WD:
  • Drive for a few feet in a straight line
  • Unlock the hubs
  • Tranny Neutral
  • Shift xfer case
Let me know how it turns out.
