air and power windows both went out at the same time. Not a fuse problem, told it could be a wiring problem. this does not tell me much. where do I check for wiring?

  • carhol Aug 28, 2008

Thanks for both solutions for my problems. I have another question. Should I replace the computer or just part of it. Can I have an auto parts place check it and give me a code. would this be helpful to me?

Id firstly disconnected the battery and reset every thing.....if they both went out at the same time then it must be where the two wires for each meet along side each other as maybe both got disconnected together...id check fuses under bonnet too

Yes, this can be a computer problem, since you already check all the fuse and nothing seems to be busted , since the computer is contorlling those 2 components the problem may really be on the computer itself...

Hope that helps.....

Try forst following our suggestion from me and expert Ginko so we can really determine if you really need to replace the whole computer or just some parts of, so do a check on your wirings even there's no blown fuse just to make sure then if you find out that theres just a part need to be replace go ahead replace..

    Good luck......

More than a computer problem this looks like a wiring problem.

Ensure you checked all fuses, many electric windows also have a relay to be checked.
If everything in the fuse box is ok, you will need to take apart door panels and to check out wiring connections, following them up to computer module.
If they have gone at same time as AC system, then it may also be a lose connection to control modules.
When it is a shrt, the fuses blow, here it is probably a connector that slipped out of place because of car vibrations.
If you go to a garage and ask to connect a code reader to car computer unit, this will probably tell you where the fault is, by reading the error codes you get in return.

Before replacing the computer test it with a code reader, or you will end up replacing a good module.

You check wings using a tester and starting from the fuse box, you test wirings for continuity, between fuse box and AC contact and between fuse box and electric windows. Then test wiring from fuse box to ECU (computer), if it is a lose contact it is likely on computer side as they went off alltogether.
    Here is a $20 tester Innova® Auto-ranging? Digital Multimeter...
The code reader cost is about $200.
You will also need a haynes or Chilton manual for your car wiring diagrams

Also unplugging the battery for five minutes can solve some computer preblem by resetting the computer, the problem with that is that you may be asked your car stereo security code after disconnecting the battery.
Check car papers, ensure that you know your car stereo code, then try unplugging the battery for few minutes.

Hi,
Seems your FUSE for interior lights poped!
Look for the fuse box under the dash, look at the bottom of the cover, there is a fuse, amperage, and for wut purpose.
Replace the blown fuse with new one, check if the fuse link is still okay, blown fuse link is disconnected if u see it physically!

Probably your compressor for the air suspension. You can put a 12 volt light bulb in the circuit in place of the fuse while you diagnose the problem.

Here's the circuit.

2b94f90.gif Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the vehicle owner's original concern by operating the vehicle to duplicate the condition.
  1. Inspect to determine if one of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply:

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Shock absorber failure
    • Leak from air line(s)
    • Leak from air spring(s)
    • Ruptured air spring(s)
    • Height sensor damaged
    • Height sensor off ball studs
    · Open Fuses:
    • Town Car
      • Power Distribution Box Fuse U (30A MAXI)
      • Instrument Panel Fuse Panel Number 1 (15A)
    • Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis
      • Power Distribution Box Fuse AIR SUSPN PUMP (30A MAXI)
      • Instrument Panel Fuse Panel Number 1 (15A)
    • Loose Connectors
    • Corroded Connectors

You need a dealer tester for this check

AUTO TEST DIAGNOSTICS At the beginning of the automatic portion of the test, the control module checks for defective control module (DTC 70), for unstable battery voltage (DTC 80), then for shorted or open conditions that would create DTCs 39 through 46, and 68 through 71. If shorts or opens are detected, the automatic portion of the test is ended and a DTC 13 (Auto Test Failed) will be displayed on the SUPER STAR II tester. If no shorts or opens are detected, the automatic portion of the test continues. The control module attempts to raise and lower the vehicle to verify that all three air suspension height sensor states (trim, high, and low) can be reached. A properly functioning vehicle will be at trim height at the end of the Auto Test. If all three states are not reached, the Auto Test will end and again a DTC 13 will be displayed. A DTC 12 will be displayed at the end of the Auto Test only if everything checked to this point is functional. After the DTC 12 (or DTC 13) is displayed, the control module is ready to check for manual inputs. The manual inputs check the steering sensor and the door courtesy lamp switch circuits. During the manual test, the module continually monitors the door Circuit 159 or 24 and the steering sensor Circuits 633 and 634 Town Car, Circuits 834 and 835 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis for activity. To pass the manual test the control module must detect that all four doors have been opened and closed, and that the steering wheel has been turned at least 1/4 turn in each direction. After the manual test, the STAR tester button must be toggled, or the control module will continue to monitor the manual test inputs indefinitely. Either a DTC 11 (Air Suspension OK) or other DTCs will be displayed at this time. After the Auto/Manual tests, the DTCs will be displayed automatically. Each DTC detected will be displayed for about 15 seconds. The code display will continue until all DTCs have been displayed. The display will repeat the DTC until the STAR test button is released (up). After all DTCs are written down, the pressed tester button may be released. DO NOT disconnect or turn OFF the tester. The tester is ready to enter the Functional Test.

96 lincoln town car-air suspension fuse

A couple of things you can do. Find a salvage yard that carries FORD/Lincoln products. You may able to get a fuse cover from them. Also, you can, although time consuming, take out each fuse and do a visual inspection of it. When you find the blown one, it should be obvious to see. Another option (my choice), get a fuse tester from an auto parts store (some times, they come in a Fuse Kit with new fuse's) Get one that has adjustable tip width? Meaning, you can slide a button on the tester and move the electrode tips closer or farther apart to work on different size fuse's. On the top of every fuse is open contact points so a tester can be used. Touch the tester to each fuse in the box until the tester 'lights ups' indicating this is the blown fuse. (tester will not light up on a good fuse) replace the fuse with one EXACTLY the same size/rating. This should do it. Note; if the fuse blows again, this means, most likely, that the air compressor needs to be replaced.
