Where is the ECM located?

ECM is probably OK. On this year its one of 3 things. First its the ignition coil causing the problem. This is the most likely cause. Second would be the fuel pump is going bad and partially locked up. The third reason is the crank sensor is going bad. Jeep ECMs don't usually act like this, they just stop working and don't act up intermittently. Not saying it couldn't be faulty, just unlikely.

99 ford ranger, idles rough till it warms up,then runs good. Hard to start after it gets hot, it acts as if it is starved for fuel. Once it does crank it runs fine.

First thought: Check the idle air control valve, or whatever its Ford equivalent is. Sometimes these start to stick and cause the rough early idle that smooths out later.

2002 Sunfire with 2.2 ECOTEC Car acted like it ran out of gas. Would crank, run roughly a few seconds, then again acted like it ran out of gas. The next day and the next 3 days it has performed...

have the fuel pressure and volume tested with a gage.this sounds and acts like a fuel pump problem.check the fuel filter as well and replace anyways.when it won`t start but cranks can you hear the fuel pump running.listen at the fuel filler neck with the gas cap off.if you can`t listen under the car at the fuel tank you should hear it running/if not hit the gas tank and if the car starts then the pump needs should check to make sure you are getting spark at the spark plugs to eliminate an ignition problem but i think its fuel.

Doesn't always start , has problems in the morning, after it sits for awhile. somestimes it starts alright sometimes it doesn't,acts like it may be out of gas, cranks over and acts like it wants to start,...

May have a fuel pump going bad or a fuel filter clogged. When the fuel pumps go bad they tend to not hold fuel in the line and it leaks back to the tank. That could be causing your hard start sometimes and not others.

does your jeep run rough? idle is real low? and when you are driving and push the gas hard it doesnt want to move? if so it is most likely the mass air flow sensor. i had to replace that 2 or 3 times on my 1999 jeep cherokee

1998 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 Starting Problems

If you are getting a strong odor of fuel, this is indicative of having spark or air problems. To troubleshoot the issue, first open the air box and pull out the air filter. With the airbox open, start the Jeep. If the problem seems to have cleared up, replace the air filter.

If the problem persists, you may be experiencing problems with the distributor, plugs, or wires. Depending on when the last time you replaced the plugs was, I would start there. The proper plugs will be Champion 438 or the equivilent, with .035 gap. New plugs is always a good idea every 35k miles or so, and they are only about $15 for a set. If your old plugs are block, clumpy, or blistered it will definitely cause problems, but usually bad plugs indicates another problem worth getting checked out. Careful on the #1 plug, the boot is hard to get out of there if you have A/C.

Starts hard runs rough

When I worked at the dealer we had bad map sensors on those Jeeps. Check for codes first. Don't change the sensor until you check it out.

1998 Jeep Cherokee - hard to start

My 98 Cherokee was the exact same. I used to have to turn the key back and forth 3 times and then it would start. Otherwise it would just crank and crank for a while and then start. Pretty embarrassing! Took it to the dealer and they said that my fuel pump was losing pressure. I changed the fuel pump and I don't have to prime the pump anymore.
