Question about 1997 Ford Contour

Idle? Fuel Pump? Tune Up? Sensor? Please Help!

My check engine light is on and stays on. We just had the motor replaced 4months ago, this is the third motor for this car. When I start the car it dies about three times before it will stay running. When I put the gas on it doesn't rev until I take my foot off of the gas peddle It is a "jerky kind of start" After you "Dog it" it finally starts driving. When I first take off in the car, you can put the gas to the floor and it won't speed up until I have driven it for about five minutes. It is having a really hard time climing hills that it used to breeze up. And when I am driving it is reving up by itself. Even when I have my foot on the brake, the car sounds as if i were hitting the gas. The majority of the times when I pull out to take off it has a delay in it where it just won't go even when you have given it gas. It is as if the car has to stop and think about it first. Causing me to almost get hit or even have to put the car in reverse and back up to avoid getting hit because by the time the car finally moves it is too late for me to pull out and I've missed my opportunity by then. We have already put gas treatments in there and this has happened for the last 3 months so it is not a bad batch of gas. Please Help!

Im not sure if the check engine light being on is a problem because mine on my 97 contour has been on for the past 6 months since i've bought it and i've had absolutely no problems with the engine

Is the check engine light on? you could have a bad ignition fail sensor, TPS sensor, or bad o2 sensor. it could also be a bad mass air flow sensor or a vacuum leak. without a code to help pin point the problem I'd start by checking those things first. Maybe try unplugging the mass airflow sensor and start it up and see if anything changes.

Emission light stays on and uses more petrol than before, car still runs fine except the fuel consumption. i have a clio extreme 04 plate. is it the lambda sensor or am i barking up wrong tree please advise...

perhaps a tune up is in order as well as check all vacuum lines for dry-rot causing it to ****-air it will contribute to fuel consumption as it takes more fuel to stay running as well it may be a hi idle or choke sensor Midas and a few parts stores offer a free scan if your ck engine light stays on

could be fuel filter fuel pump or dry rotted vacuum lines ...or faulty fuel pressure sensor clogged air cleaner ...fluid levels are correct ? ...shaking ....ck all the lug nuts and the tires for broken belts and proper fit ...look for any wires that may be touching ground ...sounds as if that was the issue

This is almost always caused by a failing mass air flow sensor. If you had it replaced with aftermarket you may want to replace with oem to avoild problems. Thanks P0171 Fuel System Too Lean (Bank 1)Possible Causes Setting Conditions Base engine "mechanical" fault affecting one or more cylinders Check for air leaks after the MAF sensor Check for air leaks in the Air Induction system (e.g., in the intake manifold) Check for air leaks in the exhaust manifold and in the exhaust pipes Exhaust leaks located in front of the AFS or HO2S location Fuel control sensor is out of calibration (e.g., ECT, IAT or MAP) Fuel delivery system supplying too little fuel during cruise or idle periods (e.g., faulty fuel pump or dirty, restricted fuel filter) Fuel injector (one or more) dirty or pressure regulator has failed HO2S has failed (it may be contaminated with fuel, silicone or water) Vehicle driven low on fuel or until it ran out of fuel
