Odd Sounds Coming From Back Wheels/Back of SUV

It started just when I was backing up, but only if I had driven it for a few miles. Now it is when I back up, start to go forward or when I am turning left or right. It starts as a clicking noise, then turns into a popping noise. Sometimes it clicks and pops real fast at the same time. My husband checked the barrings and re-greased them and he also checked the brakes. What else could it be? It is a 4x4 and 4.7 ltr

Thanks for trying. I just asked my husband about it and he said that he has already checked that too. Have anymore ideas of what could be wrong with it. It sounds almost like something is binding in the wheel. We just can't figure it out and don't have a lot of money, so am unable to take it to a shop at this time.

Any other ideas welcome. Hopefully somebody, somewhere has had this happen to them and know what the problem is?.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions out there? I have to go to Florida in a week and am terrified that I am going to break down or have an awful wreck. It is clicking, popping and grinding when I back up and first go forward or when I am turning. I really need help guys. Don't have a lot of money and am thinking of just getting rid of my SUV even though I absolutely love it.

Same problem on our 2002 Dodge Durango 4WD. Any help would be great as my husband was laid off and no longer has a job. We just put $2400 into a tranny rebuild on it. Also does anyone know if the front drive shaft should be turning when its in 2WD?

Recently had oil changed. Soon after, oil light started coming on w. alarm sound. We check oil and it's always full. Stops if I shift to neutral, resumes dinging when I shift back into drive.

I would suggest you have the oil pressure checked with a manual gauge. It sounds to me like you might have a restriction at the sump tube and your engine has low oil pressure.

Rear wheels/axle

Sounds like the brakes are being applied. I would suggest you have it towed as a fire could result from driving it.

Squealing noise coming from the front wheels, only does it when slowing down and after it's ran a few km

Get your brake pads replaced soon. Sounds like to me the squealers are starting to make noise. That is the indication signal to change the brake pads. Depending on how many KMS or MILES that are on your vehicle the drums & rotters may need attention.

Sounds like the differential bearings are on the way out. Big perfromance cars like this are always driven hard and its hard on the diff. Put the car up on solid stands, chock the front wheels and put in drive and see if you can here the noise from the diff.

It sounds like you might be having a problem with your Electronic control module. Are the only codes coming up just for the sensor? Have you recently cleaned your engine or driven in very wet weather? If so, water could have gotten into your connections at the modules and causing odd codes. I hope this helps. Jay

I had the same problem with my 2002 Mountaineer at about forty thousand miles. Murcury replaced the steering column free under warranty. I now have ninty two thousand miles and it's back. The rear end is making a whining noise, the tranny is starting to slip, and the rear window regulator went out. Why did we buy a Mercury?????? Disgusted Dave!!!

Service engine soon light is on..

If the check engine light has been coming on you could take it to an Advance Auto Parts store and they can run the codes for you for FREE and tell you why the light is coming on. That way you or whoever is not just guessing so you are not replacing parts not needed which can get expensive. Sounds like it could be as simple as a tune up but could also be a sensor of some kind which there are several that could cause your problem. MAP sensor, Mass Air Flow sensor, throttle position sensor just to name a few.
