Look at all the pullys some are smooth some have ridges run the outside (smooth) of the belts around the smooth pullys run the inside(ridges) around the ones with ridges simple

You can get this from your local parts house such as Auto Zone, or Advance , among others. The parts folks are doing more and more of this kind of service.

Trying to put on serpentine belt but the tensioner will not stay tight now what am I not doing?

Double check that you have the belt routed properly. Sometimes they can be tricky to figure out. Most belt packaging will come with a diagram. Its also possible that the tensioner is shot and needs replacement.

Change a serpentine belt on a 1996 chevy cavalier

Diagram should be under the hood
The auto tensioneris down low and dificult to get to.
If it has not been changed in a while you will need a long thin push stick and a serpentine tool.
Push on the belt hard at the auto adjuster and pop the belt off the smooth pully (located top).
hook up the serpentine belt tool and then mount the new belt

Replace serpentine belt

There is a tensioner wheel that keeps the belt tight. Use a wrench on the nut in the middle of that wheel to rotate the arm and loosen and remove the belt and to put on the new belt. There should be a diagram on the radiator showing the routing of the belt.

Serpentine belt tensioner will not tighten

If the tensioner will not keep the belt tight then the tensioner is bad and will need to be replaced. The spring on the inside will loose it's tension over time.
