How do you remove and replace the left side drive axle on a 1997
Toyota Avalon? The orignal driveshaft has been removed, except for a round thick metal that is still attached to the transmission. How do I go about removing this piece? Help?

I usually hold a small hammer against the side of the trans to act asa pivot, then engage a prybar into the notch in the axle stub and just pop it out.

How to replace a front axle on a 2002 freelander landrover


1. Remove hub centre disc and remove hub nut with wheel on ground.

2. Jack up affected side (not under lower control arm), remove wheel.

3. Remove two caliper bracket bolts and tie caliper up out of the way.

4. Disconnect outer steering joint.

5. Remove two strut-to-hub bolts and pivot hub outwards to release driveshaft outer drive flange.

6. Place oil catch can under car and carefully pry out inner driveshaft joint and remove driveshaft.

7. Reverse steps with new driveshaft. Remember to replace any lost gearbox / transfer box oil.

Left new axle doesn't want to slide in on 97 toyota avalon v6


i had the same problem on a toyota camry. what worked from me is i went out and bought a pair of i piping vise grips from northern tool, they look like a whales mouth. anyways they are big enough to wrap around the axle. lube the axle spine with grease then put a piece of pipe against the vise grip. and knock the **** out of it with a hammer.

trust me i know this sounds bad but it works

Clutch replacement


Clutch replacement will requre the removal of the transmission. If it is a rear wheel drive the trans can be removed fairly easily. Front wheel drive autos have the engine and transmission mounted in a "transerve" (across) fashion and require more time for removal. rear wheel drive requires the removal of the driveshaft (not difficult) and the front wheel drive requires the removal of the drive axles( can be difficlt). If your not mechanicly inclined and have a fair assortment of tools and equipment, this job is best left to a quailified person. You need Jack stands, floor jack, transmission adaptor, and if it's a front wheel drive, you will need an inpact gun to loosen the axle nuts on the drive axles.

Pass cv joint will not come out of carier, removed clip, what next ? 97 toyota avalon...


This is for the removal of the passenger side cv joint. If the Avalon carrier is like the Camry you will have to remove the snap ring and the set bolt. You have 2 choices to get the carrier bearing out,(1) remove bracket, and take it out with the cv joint as yiu noticed the bolts are in tight spot (2) You will need a torch with a rose bud tip and put a lot of heat (red hot)on the cast iron bracket and be in postion to hit the cv joint bearing (on the tire side of carrier) with a hammer and drive it out. This is the way I prefer but, take caution with flame. Do step 2 only if you are planning on replacing the cv joint anyway.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Mark the position of the driveshaft yoke on the axle companion flange so they can be reassembled in the same way to maintain balance.
  3. Remove the flange bolts and disconnect the driveshaft from the axle companion flange.
  4. Allow the rear of the driveshaft to drop down slightly.
  5. Pull the driveshaft and slip yoke rearward until the yoke just clears the transmission extension housing seal. Mark the position of the slip yoke in relation to the transmission output shaft, then remove the driveshaft.
  6. Plug the transmission to prevent fluid leakage. To install:
  7. Lubricate the yoke splines with suitable grease.
  8. Remove the plug from the transmission and inspect the extension housing seal; replace if necessary.
  9. Align the slip yoke and output shaft with the marks made at removal and install the yoke into the transmission extension housing. Be careful not to bottom the slip yoke hard against the transmission seal.
  10. Rotate the axle flange, as necessary, to align the marks made during removal.
  11. Install the driveshaft yoke to the axle flange. Install the bolts and tighten to 71–95 ft. lbs. (95–130 Nm).
  12. Lower the vehicle.

How to replace or install a nissan quest 1997 axle


two axles, different for ach side. Passenger side has a carrier on the half shaft, driver side is one solid link. Loosen lug nuts, the you need a 36mm socket to loosen the center nut on the drive shaft, same for both sides. Remove the cotter pin and retainer before loosening the center nut. Jack up the vehicle and secure with jack stands. Remove wheels. Remove brake calipers and tie up out of the way. Loosen and remove lower strut bolts (2) and lower ball joint bolts (3). Swing center knuckle out and off the drive shaft. On passenger side, loosen carrier bolts (3) halfway up the drive shaft, above the exhaust pipe and crossmember. This is a pain on the 94, but easier on later models. The passenger shaft has two half shafts joined at the carrier. No retainer clip is used, so pull on the end of the shaft and it will come out. Iff the inner CV boot is puked, it will probably come out in two pieces. You may have to use a large screwdriver to pry the inner shaft out of the transaxle. The driver side does not use a carrier and will come out with a strong pull. It does use a retainer clip on the inside end of the driveshaft. You can get new driveshafts with cvs as an assembly at most auto parts stores Be sure the new driver side shaft has the new retainer clip on it. Assembly is reverse of dissassembly, but make sure to tighten everything up good.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee with fulltime 4wd and only turns rear!


You know for a fact no power is being sent to the front axle? This transfer case only sends power to the front axle when the rear axle is slipping. Are there any unusual noises in the front axle?

If it is the transfer case, replacing it is not too big of a deal. If you are the least bit confident of your abilities, then you can do it yourself. I believe you have the NP242 transfer case, but I could be wrong. There will be a tag on the back side of the case, facing the rear axle, to the left of the drive shaft. On that tag, it will tell you which case you have. You can either have yours rebuilt, or buy a replacement either new or used.

To remove the t-case, first drain the fluid. Next remove the front driveshaft by removing the four bolts holding the u-joint in place. Then remove the rear drive shaft by doing the same as the front driveshaft, only this time it's at the rear differential. Once the drive shaft is free, support the full weight of the driveshaft, not that heavy, and pull it out of the t-case and set aside. Disconnect the shifter linkage and wiring harness. Next, remove the bolts that connect the t-case to the t-case cross member. Lift slightly and support the tranny/t-case assembly and remove the cross member. The t-case isn't very heavy, but you don't want it falling on your head, so remember to support it as you remove the bolts that connect it to the rear of the tranny. Once you bring it out from under the Jeep, and it's rebuilt or you have another unit to replace it, installation is the reverse of removal. Just remember to refill the t-case with the proper fluid.

I M TRYING TO REMOVED THE DRIVER SIDE AXLE BOOT ON AN 2002 TOYOTA AVALON AND I CANT GET THE INBORD JOINT SHAFT OFF THE AXLE


You might have to hit the joint the wrong way to reveal a c-clip on the shaft to remove first.
