It sounds like you are picking up in the fuel system or the oil is dirty or over due for changing.

I will be honest with you, we had 1 guy at my large Ford dealer (38 techs) repair shop that really was good with the 7.3, it could be a number of things in the fuel control system that can cause this issue, the system is electronic digital fuel injection, the first thing to do is to run an active test, we call this the "Key On Engine Running test", it runs the engine through a number of tests and reports it's findings when the test complete's. I would say a Ford dealer with all that special equipment is were your truck should be diagnosed, dealers charge more but they do fix the issue 90% of time, and stand 100% behind there repairs.

This engine 'loves' glow plugs! One goes and the others try to handle the amps. Change them and you will have no probs! Other than that, I feel this is about the best diesel truck made!

7.3 rough idle

Gas or diesel having same problem, I'd start there to confirm fuel pressure . It may be pump running partially when cool, but when it heats up (the pump) it may be cutting out pressure wise. Not uncommon for a fuel pump to pump good when cold, then die once pump heats up from running. Still makes noise, but isn't supplying any or enough pressure.

Where is fuel pump 2000 f250 crew cab 5.4 liter truck started wont stay running now it wont even start

If it isn.t a diesel, the pump is in the gas tank, have to drop the tank to get at it.

1992 Ford F250 7.3 Diesel hard to start

It is possible that some of the glow plugs might not be working. This will cause a hard start and smoking condition especially in cold weather.
