Question about 2002 Ford SVT Focus

Engine shakes when idling, not when driving; brake problem as well

Today when my wife got in the and started it, she said the engine was shaking when in neutral/idling. And when I got in to take it around the block to see what was up, the engine was fine above 15 mph or so.

But the other problem is that the brakes all of a sudden aren't working well. The car will slow easily, but takes a little extra to come to a stop. And sometimes the pedal gets stiff.

These both started happening this morning, and while I might have ideas what each individual problem might be, I didn't know if they could be related or just coincidence.

Check your vacuum hoses and see if one has come off. You might hear a hissing under the hood when running also if it is vacuum leak. this will cause both problems

Make sure when you changed the plugs thsat you did not cross any of the plug wires. if you put any wires in the wrong place you could do serious damage to the engine!

2002 olds intrigue shakes while idling with brake on in drive

The cause is too low an idle and engine is starving for fuel so it shakes like that. The thumping sound you hear is most likely just the exhaust being too close to the floor amd bumping against it when in drive with brake on.You said yourself that it stops when you put it in nuetral, well the engine speed goes up when there's no stress on it.With some one holding the brake and it's sitting there thumping, set the idle speed up just enough to make the engine stop rocking that way.

Do you have a service light on or check engine. If the car shakes when it is not moving it is not the brakes.I would guess an engine misfire or poor engine preformance if it does it while idling. An 11 year old Volvo is probaly ready for some new plug wires and spark plugs if it has not already been done.Good Luck!

Rough idle only when in gear.

The Air Idle Control Valve (IAC) may be bad or dirty with carbon build up. Check for loose wire, remove and try to spraying it with throttle body cleaner to clean the carbon out and dry it with a hair dryer before installing.
The other thing to look for to is stuck EGR valve. same process as the (IAC) as to cleaning it too. If both are beyond cleaning then replace it.
You can go to Auto Zone and have the car scanned for any DTC codes which would indicate any problems with the (IAC) and EGR's performance.
The other thing to that would make the engine shake at low RPM's is bad spark plug and wire or low engine compression, but that would give you problems through out the whole engine's performance.
Good luck and hope this helps, Start with the (IAC) and EGR as to cleaning and scanning the engine.

Engine idling varies depending on light or aircon is on/off

dude its normal for first start or cold start that the idle is ok but it must high than normal... its normal because the engine is warming up it self... when it gets warm, the idle speed will return normal idle... your engine is 1200cc, it has not much HP for a great load... and i know its a carburatored engine and its an old engine, your head lyt and a/c fan and aux fan and all the electrical system on your car, uses the HP of you engine and its a lot of load to the alternator driven by the engine to generate an electricity they need and thats why the engine rpm speed lowering down to dead and its shake. thats why when you use your lyts or all electrical, you engine is weakening... the best remede is adjusting you idle speed... its located behind the carburator.. its a small black knob.. just make a twist each eighter way and you'll find out if your idle rpm speed ts incresing or decresing.. just increase it and try opening your lyts and other electrical, if its still shaking then adjust it a little more
