My 99 vw jetta reads 190 degress but in the water resavor seems to be boiling hot and water is not circulating thru the system. Just replaced the thermostat and also radiator. What else could be causing this heating problem? Also fans do kick in when ac is on.

My 1999 vw jetta is over heating but the gauge stays at 190 degrees. we have installed a new radiator, thermostat, and preged the system. The reason for all this was cuz my car had a leak and notice a milky film in the resavor. had my head rebuilt new gaskets bolts too. and everything else i said above. What else is there for me to do? btw car runs great just still over heating!

If it needs a water pump wouldnt there be a sensor to let us know that it has gone out? And if there is a sensor which one would it be?

Welcome to Fixya

You need to replace the water pump. This part keeps the water circulates from radiator to engine.

there are no sensor for the water pump. but clearly on the problem you described it is already a water pump failure. Water will not circulate if the thermostat is bad and radiator is clogged then third is water pump quit working.

You may have installed the thermostat in backwards, when it gets hot do the hoses feel like they have too much pressure?

Now you think that the water pump is faulty? Does th vehicle have heat? If so does the car shut off or ever go past the 1/2 mark on the temperature gauge?

P1296 Problem(vw jetta 2001 wolfsburg edition)

There is a common fault with the cam belt driven waterpump on VAG engines as they use a plastic water-drive. The water-drive on the pump shaft breaks up or free and no longer circulates the water. Replace water pump.

1999 VW Jetta, it overheats even after I replaced the thermostat and the plastic housing on the drivers side of the engine (it was cracked). I let it run with the res. tank open because I thought it might...

With the symptoms you describe, coolant is not circulating through the system. Your first move to replace the thermostat was good. My next move would be to replace the water pump. Good luck.

2002 Jetta 1.8T blew 40A cooling fan fuse - overheated, destroyed 4 way cooling hose connector - replaced all- now it still runs very hot, inside temp reads 190 (but temp is much higher), cooling fans run...

Then replace the thermostat, because if on lower hose not hot and on upper hose scalding hot = antifreeze flow blocked by the thermostat wich remains closed!!!

Engine runs hot, fan comes on & stays on.

Try to see if the water is circulating in the system. Better way to check without burning yourself is to take the thermostat out and run the engine this way it should start circulating right away. If the impeller on the water pump is not turning the water wont circulate.
I have seen this in a VW Jetta but don't know what type of w/pump is in your Honda.

What is the average temp. of a 1800 vw running at 55mph.?

240 is a bit too high... 190-200 is more like it... check your fan switch and see if it kicks on at 190 and off again at 180... if not replace it... if it's good then suspect the t-stat or a radiator clog. Also, timing that is advanced too far will make it run hot (and is very bad for the engine!) Hope this helps ...;-)

Volkswagen jetta over heating

hi tammy
it could be an air lock stopping the water from circulating properly i seem to recall this problem on the older VW Derby and audi 50 (same engine) there is a small bleed screw at the highest point on the cooling system that allows you to bleed this air out youll find its location in the manual

another thing to try is put a flushing agent through the system incase there are any blockages in the radiator itself

hope this helps

2002 VW fan stays on too long?

How does the temperature gauge read on your dash.. Is your car temp at 190 degrees while driving.. If its higher than 190 your overheating and that would cause the fan to cool her down.. good Luck
