I have 1999 avalon and would like to know the usage of
1- track off switch
2- EST power
3- O/D on the transmission lever
with regards

The TRAC OFF switch turns the Traction Control off.

THE ECT /Power switch stretches the 1-2 and the 2-3 automatic trans upshifts longer (useful if you are carrying a heavy load, otherwise, it does nothing)

The O/D is the overdrive. This gives you maximum MPG when driving. It is sort of like 5th gear in a manual trans car.

93 ford tempo, changed neutral safety switch. worried i may have broken the kickdown lever, reattached all the linkage to it and now the transmission won't shift into 2nd gear until about 35mp


What about the rest of the shift points. 2 to 3 and 3 to 4? If the others are normal than the problem is with the 1-2 internals and not the T-V linkage.
It seems the transmission Is acting as if the throttle is wide open; for the 1-2 shift, therefore there is something in the linkage is broken or out of adjustment since your work. The last step before opening up the transmission to replace the TV linkage is to make sure the external TV cable linkage is set up right, and after is verified, if you are still seeing WOT upshift points that function of the internal to external kick down parts will need to be repaired. Sorry.

If you know a good local independent transmission specialist you might see him and get some advice.

Replace ignition switch on 99 jeep wrangler


The ignition key must be in the key cylinder for cylinder removal. The key cylinder must be removed first before removing ignition switch.REMOVAL 1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. 2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place shifter in PARK position. 3. Rotate key to ON position.4. A release tang is located on bottom of key cylinder.5. Position a small screwdriver or pin punch into tang access hole on bottom of steering column lower cover.INSTALLATION 1. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place shifter in PARK position. 2. Position key cylinder into steering column as it would normally be in the ON position. 3. Press key cylinder into column until it snaps into position. 4. Check mechanical operation of switch. Automatic Transmission: Be sure transmission lever is locked in PARK position after key removal. If key is difficult to rotate or is difficult to remove, the shift lever-to-steering column cable may be out of adjustment or defective. If key can be removed, release lever mechanism may be defective. Release lever mechanism is not serviced separately. If repair is necessary, the steering column must be replaced. 5. How to fix the shift cable





  1. Position the steering column transmission shift lever to PARK (P).
  2. Apply the parking brake.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.




  1. Position the transmission range select lever to PARK (P). Rotate the range select lever clockwise until it reaches the full mechanical stop position.




  1. Slide the black retaining clip forward on the range select lever cable end. This will allow the white lock button to be pushed out.




  1. Push the white lock button on the range select lever cable end out. This will free the metal core adjust body which is inside the cable end. Do not push the white lock button completely out.
  2. Inspect the metal core adjust body on the cable end for dirt or debris that may restrict the travel. Remove any debris by washing the cable end, the metal core adjust body, and the white lock button with soap and water. If the travel of the metal core adjust body remains restricted after the cleaning, replace the cable assembly.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Ensure that the parking brake is applied.
  5. Turn ON the ignition switch.




  1. Move the transmission shift lever from PARK (P) to 1 and back to PARK (P) ten times.




  1. Place the steering column transmission shift lever in the Park (P) position.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.




  1. Position the transmission range select lever to PARK (P). Rotate the range select lever clockwise until it reaches the mechanical stop position.




  1. Push in the white lock button in order to secure the core adjuster body inside the range select lever cable end.




  1. Slide the black retainer clip rearward over the cable end until it covers the white lock button. Lock the clip over the cable end.
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Turn ON the ignition switch.
  4. Ensure that all the transmission shift light positions (P. R. N. D, 3, 2, 1) engaged and illuminate. If you cannot perform this task, repeat the cable adjustment procedures.
  5. Ensure that the engine starts in PARK (P) and in NEUTRAL (N) positions only. If the engine does not start in PARK (P) and in NEUTRAL (N), the Park/Neutral Position Switch may need adjustment.
  6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
  7. Ensure that the ignition key can only be removed with the transmission shift lever in the PARK (P) position.
  8. Start the engine and check the vehicle transmission shifting. The range select lever cable is properly adjusted if the steering column shift light positions are the same as the transmission engagements.

Transmission not shifting 1-2 or 2-3, even with new used trans.


Check the transmission fuse. If the transmission has no power it will stay in 3rd. These are common for having bad ignition switches causing this.

Shift Control Linkage The transmission range selector control linkage consists of the following components:
  • a floor mounted transmission range selector lever.
  • a transmission control switch on the transmission range selector lever.
  • a cable connecting the transmission range selector lever to the transmission manual control lever.
  • a brake/shifter interlock system.
  • an ignition/shifter interlock cable (3F719) connecting the reverse kick down spring (7219) to the steering column lock assembly.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Gearshift Lever Removal
  1. Place transmission range selector lever in OVERDRIVE. Remove console finish panel (04567). Refer to Section 01-12 .
Console Panel, Floor Removal and Installation
  1. Remove gearshift lever. Refer to Section 07-05 .
  2. Remove center A/C-heater instrument panel finish panel (04338).
  3. Remove instrument panel finish panel (044D70).
  4. Remove two screws retaining console finish panel (04567) to radio control cover (04530).
  5. Unsnap RH rear corner of console finish panel and then disengage three retaining clips from LH rear corner.
  6. Disconnect cigar lighter socket and retainer (15055), lamp and switch connectors and remove console finish panel.
  7. Remove two screws retaining console panel (045A36) to instrument panel (04320).
  8. Open glove compartment door (06024) and remove console glove compartment mat (047A74) in bottom of console glove compartment (06010) to gain access to two console panel-to-instrument panel console bracket retaining screws. Remove screws.
  9. To remove, slide console panel rearward and up.
  10. To install, reverse Removal procedure. Tighten screws to 1.5-1.9 Nm (13-17 lb-in).

  1. Remove brake interlock cable and disconnect cable from range interlock cam.
  2. Disconnect transmission range indicator lamp/TCS electrical connector.
  3. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02 .
  4. Remove range cable retaining nut from transmission bracket. Disconnect shift cable and bracket (7E395) from transmission control selector connecting rod adjustment stud (7B415).
  5. Lower vehicle. Remove range selector lever and housing retaining bolts and remove gearshift lever (7210).
Installation
  1. Install transmission range selector lever to front floor pan (11135) with retaining bolts. Tighten to 6-8 Nm (4-6 lb-ft).
  1. Connect shift cable and bracket. Tighten retaining screw to 3-4 Nm (25-35 lb-in). Install retaining clip and connect transmission range indicator lamp wire.
  1. Install console finish panel.
  1. Place the transmission range selector lever in OVERDRIVE and apply a 1.4 kg (3 lb) rearward force to the lever.
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02 .
  1. Connect theshift cable and bracket to the manual control lever (7A256) and transmission bracket. Make sure manual control lever is in OVERDRIVE and tighten nut at bracket to 13-25 Nm (10-18 lb-ft).
  1. Lower vehicle and check range selector for proper operation.

I have a code of p1705 on my avalon, I don't know what does really mean. it tells me that I have a problem wiht the clouch sensor. do I need to replace it and where is it located. thank you for your help.


Slippiung transmission
1. Check the resistance on the direct clutch speed sensor. 560 -680 ohms should be present.

2. Monitor the wave form pattern on the direct clutch speed sensor at the Engine Control Module (ECM) for a good wave form and no cutouts on the signal.

3. Check the fluid and the transmission condition. Check for slight slippage of the transmission.

you need to adjust the shift linkage and neutral - park safety switch.
Cable Adjustment —Shift Indicator
  1. Remove the upper instrument panel steering column cover (04459); refer to Section 501-12 .
  1. Place the gearshift lever in the (D) position.
    • Rotate the gearshift lever clockwise until it bottoms out (first gear), then rotate two detents counterclockwise ((D) position).
  1. Hang a 3.6 kg (8 lb) weight on the gearshift lever.
  1. Center the pointer in the middle of the (D) position.
    • Rotate the thumbwheel located on the bottom of the steering column to adjust the pointer.
  1. Remove the 3.6 kg (8 lb) weight.
  1. Carefully move the gearshift lever from detent to detent and compare with the transmission settings.
    • Readjust if necessary.
  1. Install the upper instrument panel steering column cover; refer to Section 501-12 .

Digital Transmission Range Sensor
The digital transmission range (TR) sensor is located on the outside of the transmission at the manual lever. The digital TR sensor completes the start circuit in Park and Neutral, the back-up lamp circuit in Reverse and the neutral sense circuit (4x4 only) in Neutral. The digital TR sensor also opens and closes a set of four switches that are monitored by the PCM to determine the position of the manual lever (P, R, N, D, 2, 1).

Usage of some switces


1 - that's the traction control system. The Avalon has the defeat switch, but I don't really know why. It's usually a feature on performance cars to allow the driver to slide the car, break the tires loose, etc, when desired. Leaving the system on defeats wheelspin and keeps the car more stable and less crash-prone. It's not a performance car, so the ability to defeat it kind of baffles me.

2 - EST power - I'm not familiar with that one

3 - O/D is overdrive. Leave the button engaged most of the time - it controls the transmission and commands it to upshift as soon as possible. This keeps the RPM lower and the fuel economy better. Generally, this is a good thing, and you'd really only want to turn off the O/D if you're driving up and down in a lot of hills (to keep the transmission from hunting between gears) or in heavy stop-and-go traffic (ie, in Manhattan), to keep it from constantly shifting.
