Question about 2001 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

Carburetor Cleaner Test

Pal03246, thanks for the quick response. I have already tried this once with no change in engine performance. Basically my 97 altima chokes (that may not be the best word, but seems to describe the problem) at lower rpm and does not run smoothly at higher rpm. It makes a sputtering noise out of the exhaust and the engine seems to shake. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Josh.

Sounds like this needs to be diagnosed fruther with a scanner/consult 2 to see how certain components are working in the car such as 02 sensors and MAF sensor/air flow meter. problems like this are hard ti diagnose over the internet, where I can't actually look at the car in real life. But it could be MAF/air flow meter. Just do one test. Find the A/C drain tube located on firewall on passenger side. See if you can blow some compressed air into the drain hose and see if any water comes out. Let me know what you find.

I have a 5.o verotex engine in a 1997 gmc. it has a idle of 1000rpm and I cant get it lower < I have replaced tps and hcv on this > am I missing something ???

You need to test for vqacuum leaks in the intake system, that is the most likely cause. Yoyu can spray carburetor cleaner around the top of the engine, if you hit a vacuum leak the sound of the engine will change, then just zero in on the exopact location.

2003 Nissan Altima won't start?

A car needs 3 things to start. Air, fuel, and spark. Check that it can get air by removing the air cleaner and inspecting it. Leave the air cleaner off for now. Try a squirt of starting fluid into the carburetor (not a lot mind you, just a quick squirt). Be prepared to quench a flame if the engine backfires through the carburetor (have a wet towel handy). Crank the engine. If it fires, you have spark. If it does not fire, you have ignition problems. If it fires and stalls out quickly, you have fuel problems.
For fuel problems: Be sure you have gas! (I know it is obvious, but check the tank!). If the car has not been used for awhile, the gas may have gummed up the carburetor. While it is possible for the weekend mechanic to take a carburetor apart and clean it, it is probably best left to a professional mechanic. Verify that you are getting gas to the carburetor by detaching the rubber gasoline hose at the carburetor. Most cars today have electric fuel pumps, so turning on the ignition should result in a stream of fuel from the gasoline hose. If not, crank the engine and see if a mechanical fuel pump moves the gas. If you get no gas, find out why or your car will never start. If you get gas, the carb is probably gummed up. It is best to conduct this last test into a mason jar to catch the gas, and it is best to postpone the cigarette break until after the test is complete.
If you suspect the ignition, pull a spark plug. It should look clean and whitish to light coffee color. If it is filled with carbon and oil, you have other engine problems. You can look for an ignition spark by laying the plug case against the engine while it is attached to the distributor wire. Crank the engine and you should see a spark jump the gap at the spark plug tip. This spark is often small and hard to see in sunlight. Do not perform the spark plug test in the temporal vicinity of the fuel test. A hot spark with gasoline nearby is dangerous.

A car that turns over means that at least the battery is good. Try next to insure it has air, gas, and spark.

Acceleration is too slow from 0 to 25 mph

i would assume that your engine still runs on carburetor. have your primary jets(in the carb) replaced. normal carb primary/secondary jetting for 1.6cc engine is 105/135. primary jets basically is responsible to acceleration, secondary jets are for speeding.

Dodge Caravan 1996 enging question

Before I paid $1500 or swapped engines (nearly as expensive) I would check to be certain the plug heat range is correct, test or change the plug wires, test the ignition coil, check the compression and perhaps do an engine diagnostic.... etc. etc. Incidentally my '93 has a 3.3l.

Car won't start once in a while, mostly after it sit's a few days. it cranks ok and almost starts. good spark, and has fuel but I can't test fuel pre. if I pull the lines from the tank it starts and runs...

your on the right track, you need three things to run an engine spark fuel and air,you can test your pump another way its primitive take 2+2 carb cleaner get access to your throttle body have someone try starting the engine while another sprays the carburetor cleaner into the throttle body if it runs while you spray and then stops when you dont your fuel pump is the problem.Chrysler is know for this fuel pump problem.

My 1998 plymouth voyager sometimes wont start. when i turn the key to on it makes a little humming sound for a second of two and then nothing. any ideas on what it could be?

From what your saying, your fuel pump is not working.Either perform a fuekl pressure test or,spray some 2+2 carburetor cleaner into the throttle body to see if your engine runs,if so your fuel pump is bad.

1991 Geo Tracker only starts with starting fluid.

Check fuel filter on both vehicles...After that check fuel pressure ...Blocking off air flow to engine will change the fuel air mixture...air deprivation changes (lessens) air flow and fools engine into reading more fuel than is actually there. Mass air flow sensor should also be checked/cleaned if no results obtained by filter change if pressure is OK.

'97 Nissan Altima

Yes. i would perform the same test on a 1997 altima. those had the same problem with the intake manifold gasket leaking. the gasket will brake and you will have a leak.nissan didn't change the gasket. the same gasket is beeing used on 1997 and the 2001. do the carb cleaner test and let me know how it responds to some carb cleaner.
