Car has not been started for several months. Now runs ruff

After sitting for several months the car will stall out and seems to be missing. Idle speed is low. Plugs were black with unburnt fuel. After cleaning and gaping plugs car ran better for a little while. Nows it is running bad again.

Spunds like the car needs a whole tune-up. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, and definately an oil change. Also, you may want to make sure the car is properly timed. If it isn't, that will cause uneven running, with carbon and/or oil build-up on the plugs.

Stalling

.... Robert Grove
johnallen496, when you say it stalls at low speeds and stops, do you mean when slowing down and coming to a stop? does it stall at low speeds while the car is moving with your foot on the pedal just a little like when driving through a parking lot?...

I used the wrong box above, oh well ....

The most common cause of stalling at low speeds, especially idling and decelerating to a stop is carbon buildup. The throttle plates get coated with carbon closing down the opening slightly, this affects the idle speed, causing the engine to stall at idle and coming to a stop.

also carbon builds up in the cylinders and absorbs fuel intended to be burnt, leaning out the mixture and causing rough/low idle and stalling - especially when the engine is cold. Dirty injectors can cause the same symptoms/results

As a maintenance routine It's good to have the throttle plates cleaned and perform a top engine de-carbon treatment, and fuel injection service in more severe cases

Sea Foam makes a spray that works great for minor de-carbon service, just spay it into the throttle plates while it is running, one to two cans will do, add a can of Sea Foam or Techron to the gas tank each time you fill up for the next few tank full's.

If you still have problems sek out a qualified professional

Good luck!

Rough idle while in gear. There are no engine lights on. I replaced the spark plugs 6 months ago and seemed run better. Rough idle came back, so I cleaned out the PCV valve and it helped for the short...

Are your rpm's low when sitting at a stop light and vehicle warmed up? You could check your TPS (Throttle position sensor) or maybe your egr is plugging up, or one of your plugs or wires could have gone bad, maybe the coil on one of the wires is bad. You really need to plug a code reader into the ECU and see if there is a code being thrown. And NO, all codes will not cause the engine light to come on.

1992 Ford Ranger with the 4.0. Extra high idle at cold start-up followed by almost stall extra low idle. Then it chugs for the first 50 ft. Gets better as it warms up.

Clean the idle air control valve or replace it and check the readings on your engine coolant temp sensor. Wrong temp reading really screw up the air / fuel mixtures

if u r not getting a check engine light then change fuel filter, add dry gas to gas , from sitting... gas went bad, sometimes u will have to drain off fuel rail and lines to clear bad gas from system. temp sensor for fan is bad.
