I have a 1996 Buick Regal Custom Sedan. The car just passed 207,000 and the check engine light has been on now for almost a year. I have had the car scanned before but it kept coming back to the fuel cap which I have replaced twice so I didn't think anything of it. About a month ago the car started to lope going down the freeway. I had the car scanned today and now the code that came back is for the Crankshaft position sensor. It it becoming a real problem as the car dies out quite frequently and it's hard to get it restarted. I don't know the cost on getting it replaced but the part it self is only about $26.00.

I bought a 2004 Malibu engine for fifty bucks from a friend and replaced my 2002 engine. There were some changes but the one I am running into is the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. They both have three wires now and the the one yhat is on the back side of the block is shorter so I can't just use mine. Somebody else told me to use plastic to space it out to the same size as the 2002. Will this work and is there a better solution besides replacing the computer system and wiring harness? Also, can i test for a signal with a standard multimeter?

Crankshaft position sensor location

The sensor is located at the bottom of the engine behind the harmonic balancer. To the right side of the motor. You have to remove the pulley to replace the sensor.

Have a 1995 Buick Regal Custom. Check engine light came on. Had sensors tested and showed cam and crank sensors. Had both replaced. Check engine light still comes on. Sits a while and light goes off...

May have a grab bag of problems.

For starters, check running fuel pressure and also check for proper operation of fuel pressure regulator. Dirty injectors could play a role here

If fuel filter hasn't been replaced, might be a good time to do so.

Look at condition of plugs, wire, and air filter. All of these could contribute to problem.

As to the testing showing both the cam position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor being bad at the same....it's certainly possible, but in my mind, a little unlikely. There may be a deeper issue here that your man hasn't yet discovered.

The description "seems to be choking for air" really makes me think of fuel starvation. If it were me, the first thing I'd do is replace the fuel filter and see what (if any) difference that makes.

In any event, good luck! Hope this was of some small degree of help to you.

Car ran fine this a.m. But engine light came on. Checked the oil it needed a quart but was not too low. Engine just won't fire no spark. Fuel pump is running. After several tries smell gas. Let sit for an...

spark is controlled by the Crankshaft Position Sensor and spark is also generated through the coil packs from the ignition module and the computer. So, it could be a number of things.

What is the OBD-II code for this engine light coming on? This can give you a clue as to what is wrong.

Good luck on repairing this problem.

Does a 2002 buick regal have a ignition position sensor

Hello trhino69.

The Regal has two position sensors.
One on the crankshaft and another on the camshaft.
If the crankshaft sensor isn't reading it will not start.
On the other hand if the camshaft sensor isn't reading it will start but the fuel injectors will revert to non-sequential firing.
The crankshaft sensor is mounted at the crankshaft harmonic balancer.
It is #4 in the diagram below.

Crankshaft posistion sensor or ignition control module?

1) do you have a Check Engine Light On while running? If so find out what the code is
2) these engines are known for their CPS going bad...it can be tested on the car with a volt meter and turning the engine, but it isnt easy....I would have to err in the direction of changing the Crank Position Sensor.
