Hi there,

I applaud you for asking this question, as this is the most neglected part of the vehicle.

Modern electronic transmissions are very sophisticated pieces of machinery, which require more care than we realise.

Although manufacturers recommend changing transmision fluid every 80 - 90,000miles, we have learned from experience that transmission fluids become contaminated and tend to break down much sooner than this.

Due to the extreme conditions imposed on the planetary gears, valves and solenoids, the only way to prolong the life of your transmission is to keep the fluid as clean as possible, and maintain the correct level.

So, my recommendations are:

- check the transmission fluid condition & level every month
- Flush the transmission every 30,000miles
- replace the transmission fluid + filter/s @ 30,000 miles (preferably the same time as a flush)

Note: NEVER overfill the transmission, as this can cause as much damage as underfilling. Use only trans fluid recommended by the manufacturer, as these fluids have special properties designed for this make of transmission.

Cheers,

Your vehicle is fairly new. You really don't have to worry about this right now honestly. However it is a good habit to do preventive maintainence. If you have your vehicle manual you will be able to find this info regarding manufacturer's specifications.

My '05 altima hesitates when i shift from park to drive then jerks into gear. once driving changes gears smoothly, no jerking, no slipping, no hesitation.

Read the owners manual for checking the Transmission Fluid. Usually it involves putting the car in Neutral and checking the fluid. If it is low, that could be the problem. If it is not, it may be a problem with the gears. I would take it to a shop to try to diagnose the issue.

It wont down shift

Whens the last time you changed tranny filter and fluid. it may be the vacuum modulator or your bands inside the tranny. Pull out your tranny dipstick when running and check level of tranny fluid. Add dextron II of needed. Smell the tranny fluid on dipstick to see if tranny fluid is burndt. if you change filter and fluid, add a can of trans-x to the fluid. Will help seals in tranny.

My 1996 GMC Suburban has 170600 miles on it. In the last week, it drives fine until you travel about 1/4 mile & reach 30 mph. Then, you loose acceleration. When you push the gas, the engine just revs....

Try dropping the tranny fluid and changing the tranny filter and filling with fresh fluid. Sounds like the tranny is sleeping between shifts.

How do I, automatic trans filter and fluid replacement.

i would not reccomend changing transmission fluid yourself. do not do it!!!

to change transmission fluid and filter, you have to take the tranny pan off the bottom of the tranny and it will make a mess of fluid. then you have to carefully remove the old tranny pan gasket, which is best done with a special machine. if you fail to remove all of the gasaket, or damage the lip of the pan while removing the gasket, then the new tranny seal will leak, and the tranny will not hold fluid. tranny fluid and filter needs to be done in a professional shop where they have the correct equiptment.

A friend has a 200 elantra it only has low and reverse is that a sigh the the tranny is out or could the filters and fluid be bad,

It sounds like a trans fluid & filter change is in order. It should be changed every 50k. Hopefully that will solve your problem & hopefully your friend didn't drive it far in this condition.

You can take it to a local shop and ask for a tranny fluid change and tranny filter change. It's the same basic concept as an oil change.. sort of. lol

I would always change Auto fluid & filter every 50,000 miles irrespective of what the manufacture states - it's cheaper than a new transmission!
