Starting Problems with a 1995 chevy astro 2wd 4.3 L

The van will start sometimes......other times it won't. When this problem first started I got it jumped and it started right up. Then I went to fuel the van stopped again and wouldnt start called a tow company to come jump start it thinking it was the battery but jumping it didn't work this time. I asked a mechanic and was told it was the fuel pump personally that dont make sense to me but if someone could please get back to me with any additional information thank you in advance!

i am having the same problem right now with same model and year vehicle, tried changing fuel pump.. still nothing! So I am stuck 75 miles from home.. with no clear solutions also.. Was told it might be the timing chain. .. Any help here?

It is completely down now won't even start and no a pressure test was not done on it. At this point I don't have all the tools needed to fix it due to it taking a special "cam wrench":(

  • ttsstr5 Sep 20, 2008

It says so in the directions with the fuel pump. I have no clue but said it can be ordered from Montana. So I am hoping this is the solution if not I pray it isn't the timing chain.

Yes we have done the starting fluid thing and that worked for awhile. But now it is completely DOA :(. So I am waiting for help to drop the fuel tank so I cab get to the pump to tell wether or not it does take the special cam wrench that the directions speak of.I will keep you updated of the progress :).

Fuel pump has been changed. Still not starting. Although it did backfire and blew the valve cover gaskets out and you can smell gas in the oil. :(

Most GMs have a 2 stage fuel pressure system. Where for examplt it requires 60+ PSI for startup and then around 45 PSI to run the engine. Give you GM dealer a call for the specs, most dealers would be happy to assist you, and then again most will not. Good Luck.

Could be the fuel pump relay. Make sure the relay is getting constant power and contacts are not corroded.

The fuel pump might be going out. Did that mechanic do a fuel pressure test/tests? Sometimes the pump might be acting up when it's going out. Off hand, I don't know what it could be.

to tell if it's the timing chain or not, just have a friend crank the motor while you spray a SMALL shot of starting fluid into the throttle body. If it runs, fuel pump. Plain and simple.

  • Steven Brock Sep 20, 2008

If it's running with the starting fluid, it's not the timing chain. The starting fluid acts like gas in the system when no gas is getting to the motor. So it's defineatly a fuel problem. No doubt about it. No need to worry about timing chain.

I have a 1995 chevy astro van it turns but it won't. Start unlesa you use starting fluid what could it be?

Since it will run on starting fluid, I would guess you have improper fuel supply. Install test gauge to see what fuel pressure you have. Could be bad pump, relay, fuel filter, regulator valve.

Chevy astro van turns over but wont start when

Check to see if the fuel pump is kicking in,
when you turn the key on without starting the van you should hear it kick on for about 2 seconds,

It could be...
A clogged fuel filter...
Blown fuse for the pump..or bad pump relay..
No gas
Bad fuel pump

do the pin point tests, these start witjh running a trouble code test, autozone and kragen will do this for free, if u haven't had the trans apart then cross out any crossed wiring issues, but I do think you will find a problem with the 2-3 shift solenoid, either the solenoid has failed or the connector has a problem on the outside of the trans.
