Question about 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24

Convertible Top Not Working Properly

When I put the top down it works fine, but when I hit the power top switch to put the top back up, is rises about a foot to 2 feet up, stops and slowly drops back down and all I here is a clicking noise from the motor. Is this a low fluid issue in the hydralic system for the power top and what type of fluid is used?

This is not a low fluid problem, this a contorl motor problem. I had a 1989 Z24 conv. and the same thing happened. I replaced the motor and the top worked just fine.

2002 clk 320 convertible top won't go down


Can you hear the convertible pump running at all when you hit the button. Most are hydronic. It might be low on fluid. Either that or check the relay

Top worked fine yesterday but today tried to let down only clicked


It is a hydraulic pump that applies pressure to the 2 hydraulic pistons to raise & lower the top. So, check for something obstructing movement first.

The convertible top:
  • is motor-driven.
  • requires parking brake engaged to complete circuit for operation.
  • is equipped with a back window glass (42006) . The back window glass is permanently attached to the folding top back window curtain (52500) and cannot be opened.

I am ready to purchase a 2000 cabriolet. The power convertible top isn't working so have to manually put up/down convertible top. How can I test to see whether it's the motor, switch, or other...


Hi Gil.Please locate the fuse box in your car that contains the fuses related to these accessories, eg convertible, CD player, lighter, door locks/windows etc.The location of the fuse box would be in the user manual provided with your car.If you donot have a user manual then it should be in under the hood or the dashboard ( behind the glove compartment ).See if the fuse relating to the convertible is OK.If its bad then replace it with a fuse of the same value.If the other fuse too goes bad then you probably have jammed motor of the convertible which is putting extra stress on the fuse, or that your wiring gets short somewhere when you press the button for the convertible to work.If you want to test the switch then simply pull the connectors of the switch from its behind and touch them with eachother if the convertible then works then the switch is bad.Regards.

Convertible top switch works sometimes but other times it does not work


If the convertible top switch not working properly every-time.Then the switch and its electrical connections/wirings needs to be checked. The switch is typically located in the trunk, positioned right beside the covering of the left or right tail light. The switch should be set to automatic, not manual. If the switch is properly set, then other things are causing the problem. The other things blocking the top to move up and down is its hinges.If the hinges are bent or cracked or got loose then this can be the other reason. If the hinges are in good condition, then check the convertible top struts. These are the mechanisms that lift the convertible top. Lift struts deteriorate due to wear and tear and will need to be replaced if it's the source of the problem. Another very common reason for a not working convertible top is the worn out elastic straps. Furthermore, the convertible top's fuse could be blown out and as a result it's causing the convertible top to stop working. In newer latest models the convertible top is controlled by a single button conveniently located next to the handbrake. You press a button to release a center locking device - none of this moving the sun visors out of the way and releasing two latches on other sides of the car stuff! - then twist the device with its conveniently large handle. Then you press the button, and if you're lucky, it'll work the first time. If not, try it again! The temperature display goes from blue to yellow and shows a "convertible top opening" graphic, and the top opens up and neatly folds itself in back. You can release the button when it beeps again. Putting it back on again is the same basic process, though you have to wait for the beep, then press the latch release, twist it, pull down, then re-twist the latch again. 1999 vw cabrio convertible top doesn't works


You have to put hydraulic fluid (power steering fluid will work too) in the convertible top motor. The motor is in the trunk, on the left hand side, under a panel. Pull the panel off and that is the electric motor for the top. You'll see a reservoir where you put in the fluid. Put in the fluid and you'll be good to go.

My convertible top wont go up


You are probably low on fluid.
Behind the rear seat is the motor/pump/reservoir.
With the top down, fill the reservoir with ATF.
Cycle the system a few times.
Repeat till the reservoir will accept no mor fluid.
Chedk the lines and cylinders for leaks. The fluid must be going someplace.
You can change it to a manual top by removing the bolt at the top of the cylinders and lowering the both shafts down into the cylinders.

How to put top down 1998 BMW Convertible


depends on what type of top you have (full power or power assisted).

if power assisted, then release the latches on the inside where the top meets the windshield, then hit the button on the lower dash (its near the button for the heated seats & traction control) and give it a little push with your hand to start it folding. it has a picture of a side window & top on it. pushing it one way lowers the top. you have to be in park (or drive with foot on brake) to lower it. hold the switch down, the side windows will lower a bit and the top will begin to move. keep holding it till the top tucks under the boot and the windows begin to go back up, then release it. if the light on this button is not flashing when you release it, then the top is tucked away properly. if still flashing, then keep it depressed until the top folding sequence is complete.

if a fully automatic top (you will not have latch releases on the top where it meets the windshield), then simply hit the button as described above. no need to push on the top during the beginning sequence. keep holding it until the windows begin to go back up, then release it.

for both, watch the top as it tucks into the boot. sometimes if the top is not properly aligned, the top cloth may not tuck correctly and may require some help from you. the sequence can be stopped any time, but the red light on this button will flash.

to put it back up, simply hit the button in the opposite manner and the sequence will start with the rear boot lifting up first. fully auto tops will lock automatically to the windshield. power assisted tops will require to lock the top. if red light on this button still flashes when released, then the sequence is not complete or has encountered an error.

Lowering convertible top


There should be latches you have to pull first to unlock the top from the windshield. Pull down the sun visors, the handles should be under them. Then push the power top switch.

Letting the top down


I had the same problem for four years until I purchased a CD from Ebay titled "BMW E30 Convertible". I discovered, that I was opening the top up incorrectly. The top works fine. Unlatch the top from the windshield frame, then lift up the back half of the top, unlatch the top lid, rise it up and lower the top into the compartment, close and latch the soft top lid. Hopes this helps.

I just got a 1997 bmw convertible. How do I let the top down ? Thank you in advance .
