I have a Mercedes S-500 and the Cluster Light on my dashboard went out? As you can Imagine I could not see my Speedometer or Rev counter or anything at all. I had no option but to take it to the Mercedes garage In Edinburgh where the fitted a new Cluster Panel complete. It seems now to work fine however at a costly price. Yours Sincerely
and thank you very much for your concern and reply.

It may not be a bulb, as the instrument cluster usually has a number of bulbs and they probably didn't all blow at once. Pulling instrument clusters can be touchy and may not be for the average "shadetree mechanic" however, typically there are a few screws above the cluster going into the dash pad and a few hidden behind the trim panels below the cluster.

My 2005 Kia Spectra L4-2.0L instrument cluster lights were flickering for a while and now most of the time they don't work. Unfortunately I have 95k and the warranty ran out at 60k (5yr 60k warranty on that item). KIA charged me $50 to tell me that the cluster has an internal short and needs to be replaced for about $500+. I called KIA corporate and said sorry your out of luck, ie no recalls or warranty left.

The unit has to come out of dash to replace bulbs.
This is a tedious project as disassembly of dash components need to be removed to get at this as well as the speedometer cable which is difficult to get back into place as well sometimes there's a wire or white string that runs the little red park, drive indicator.
May be easier to get a couple LED's or small 12v light and run some extra wires from the 12 volts off the radio fuse and a ground anywhere on a body screw that goes into metal body parts and not just plastic. - drill a hole in the face-plate and install your own light/s with some fine wires and silicone dabs to seal things in place, lol and save a lot of work and money.

There are 2 diodes in the underhood fuse box (diodes look like black fuses) one of those diodes is blown, there is a spare diode in the interior fuse panel. Remove that spare and swap it with both of the ones under the hood.
