Re: gear shifter lock and car wont start
Try removing the trim around the selector and see what is jamming it - there's usually a brake interlock that keeps the car in Park until the brake pedal is held down (this activates a switch on the brake pedal arm, which disengages the lock). The way I see it, you either have a faulty brake pedal switch, or the lock itself is jammed. Look in there and see if it's something that shouldn't be there - if the shifter is being held in place by a device that is part of the car, chances are the brake pedal interlock switch failed. If you have a pretzel or something in there, well, there's your solution:)

Manufacturers have designed the shifters to lock in the Park position. This is to prevent children from accidentally moving the shifter out of Park if they are playing behind the wheel (as they should not be of course). The ignition must be in the ON position, with the brake pedal pressed, to release the shifter from PARK. If there is a malfunction, most cars have a bypass release button hidden near the shifter. Check your owners manual for details if needed.
First, what is exactly happening? as there is no fuse for Gear shifter.
Is the car not going out of park? If so, then check the Brake switch. Brake has to be depressed which operates the brake switch sending signal to the gear shifter to unlock so it can be shifted. If Brake switch is okay then only a mechanical obstruction is preventing the shifter operation. For this you will have to take of the cover on the gear shifter to see what is fouling.
Could be the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid. You may be able to turn the key lock to the unlock position, move the shifter out of park, then start the engine in neutral. The shifter and the shift lock solenoid would need to be inspected.
Most of the time the problem is the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid. You may be able to take the shifter out of park by turning the key lock to the unlock position but not to the on position. You may also have a problem with the transmission park gear, or the shift linkage.
there is a slot next to the gear shifter that you can put a key into and push down that will release the lock on the the shifter...
if its a truck and your putting the key in the ignition and turning it on, or at the very least to the acc position and it wint shift, apply the brake and then try, if it still wont move your most likley going to have an ignition lock malfunction... the cylinder that your key slides into and turn, to turn the car on has an unlocking piece that allows it to unlock only then the key is in..... try those and let me know....
hope this helps
need more info but it could be blown fuse back left of hood compartment 20 amp fuse (stop fuse) it works a little selinoid when you step on the brake before you put it in gear then it unlocks the gear shifter it just happened to me 5 min ago
