My 1996 gmc 1500 4x4 lost overdrive and reverse what could the problem be

if it is auto then run the fault codes as it may be a TCM problem
If manual I suspect that the selector fork on that selector rail has come loose as both 5th gear and reverse gear is on the same selector rail

Need to replace gear selector on golf automatic as it wont start cut out on me so was in gear have had it checked and it is the gear selector how do i fix it myself

Hi Gary, I may be wrong but I think the gear selector mechanism would not cause the vehicle to cut out? If a diagnostic scan has reported a fault with the selector mechanism it will be with alignment of the switching mechanism which allows start up only in park or neutral. If the starter turns the engine with the selector in either of those two positions (P or N) the problem is with the engine not the shifter. If the engine does not turn you may have two or more problems. Give more details and describe the events leading to the problem more clearly. Regards John

Clutch not letting engagement of gears, clutch pedal is soft.

hi first thing to try is to adjust the clutch pedal cable up that is done at the gearbox side by adjusting the 10mm nut on the end of the cable, if after you have done this you can then select gears you will most probably need to replace clutch due to wear.if you cant select any gears even after adjusting the cable then it sound like you have a problem with the selector rod a common fault is for the bushes to wear and knock the selector out of line, check for excessive play in selector rod rubber bush.

2004 F-450 power stroke diesel, sometimes it won't turn over when you turn the key. It has a automatic transmision,if I shift it to drive then back to park,it will usually crank.Once it cranks and runs it...

It may be a fault with the gear selector ignition isolation switch on the side of the transmission. As a safety measure the vehicle cannot be started when the gear selector is in anything other than park (maybe neutral). If the linkage between the gear selector and the selector switch on the transmission is a bit slack or the switch on the transmission is faulty the ignition might be disabled as it assumes it is actually left in gear. Check the this selector switch and the shift linkage to it. I think the fault might be easy to correct with adjustment, clean up or exchange

Hello, I drive a Mitsubishi Galant E-Ea1a model 1998 and it over heated then put the coolant but after it allowed to start, it had no strength to move and climb a 30 degree angle... i had to push it...

If no gear selector light. Then it can be faulty Gear selector module or loose wire connection with the Gearbox ECU.If that checks ok then its faulty gear box. Thanks. keep updated for any more query.you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Brake light on all the time.

obviously their is a fault on the gear selector wiring but where ,because the stop light switch is used to control the gear selector.suggest dealers because some dealer fitter with product experiance will know exactly where fault lies

Sprinter gear selector

This is the gear linkages. It is a cable operated system to allow the gear lever to be dash mounted.

They are a common fault. The parts are about £65 from Mercedes (dealer only part) and unless you know what you are doing you can expect about 2 - 3 hours labour charge, though there are no special tools involved.

They average about 60,000 miles, though the replacements tend to be better.
