Question about 1995 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight

1 Answer

Car won't crank. Believe it is the ignition (crude) security system. GM doesn't know what to do.

About half the time my car (110,000 mi) won't crank. If I wait 3-5 minutes it usually will crank. I think the problem is that the ignition switch of "security module" is not reading the electrical resistance in the key and shuts down starting for 3-5 minutes. New key from GM does not help. I have had car in GM shop and talked to GM dealers all over SE Iowa. None of them seem to understand this. When it was in the shop it would not fail. Next day it failed again.
I am an electrical engineer. Can I bypass this security feature? Where can I get schematics. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank-you for your response! Just to clarify... the "starter relay" is a traditional electrical relay that switches a high current to the starter itself. We are NOT talking about the solenoid within the stater assembly that engages the the starter motor gear into the flywheel. Is this correct?
Where is the starter relay located?
    Many thanks,

I have a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville with a 3.8 v6. The car has a new alternator, starter, control module, new spark plug wires. I took the key without the control to start the car. The car starts, idles and then after 10 to 15 minutes, it cuts off. The only thing left on is the ignition switch on and as I open the door the door indicator is showing. It then, take 10 to 15 minutes to start again. I have had the car in multiple shops and this has been a on going problem for the last 10 months. If I drive the car, it is fine, but, it will just shutoff. Does GM have a recall on this car? What is the problem?

Passlock: System must detect proper R-code within ignition lock (or ignition switch) in order to start engine. Does NOT have chip in key.

96 ford taurus won't turn over

You can't override the security system on this car, if it was easy what good would it be. You will need the dealer to scan the system to see why it is activating and locking out the engine start.

1993 Buick Park Avenue we had a dead battery so we removed and charged it. Now the Car won't start and when I put key in the ignition the security light starts flashing

Any car with a Factory Anti-Theft System does this whenever battery power is lost. If your owners manual doesn't address this, you will have to contact a GM Dealer to get the system reset. Sorry!

It sounds like you have an issue with your PassLock security system. I had the same with my 2002 Impala. Key turns OK, but won't start, won't crank. Wait 20-30 minutes, and car starts normally. There is usually a clue from the Battery and Security lights.
The problem starting to happen once a month, and eventually 1-2 times a week.
There are several write-ups on this problem for several GM cars for 2000-2006(?). Search this website, and search the web.
The official solution is to replace the ignition switch. The best solution is to bypass the Pass Lock system. I went ahead and did a full bypass, which involves cutting wires and adding resistors to the ignition circuit. I have not had a problem since.

This car is equipped with Passlock antitheft security by GM. You dont have a chip, but there is a transponder in the key head. This system is known to fail. The fact that the security light is on proves the failure of the Passlock and why it wont run. The hard part is finding out which part of the passlock system has failed. Replaced ignition module now it won't run at all

After changing the ignition module, you may have broken the communication between all the components in the anti theft security system. This is common on GM antitheft systems. Check out this link for how it works and solutions to security problems.

Starter wont crank on a 2000 oldsmobile intrigue

Check your manual if you have it. I believe you need to have the key in the ignition in the ON position for about 10 minutes to reset the security system.
