96 lincoln town car- loud humming noise

My 96 lincoln town car has started making this very loud humming type noise. when this noise starts you can rev the engine and it seems to make the noise go away, if you don't rev the engine the car will die but is easily restarted. it seemed to have started after we replaced the altenator so we took it back to the mechanic and he said the new altenator was too hot when he touched it so he replaced it but it started to make the noise again and it is happening more often. could it be the fuel pump? or could it be dirty fuel filters making the pump go dry?

I have a 2001 town car - this humming only happens when heat is on , and

the engine will surge (rpm's) then stall.

My 93 TC is doing the same thing. I found that the 1/2 rubber hose that connects to the driver side of the throttle assembly is where the hum comes from. It connects to a metal tube that then goes down between the firewall and motor to who knows where. I can disconnect it from the throttle assembly and it hums as loud as a fog horn. It only does it from time to time. And also seems to cause an periodic engine rev.Whatever this hose goes to it sucks air down it hard. I haven't found any leaks or cracks in the hose, so anyone out there know why all the noise and how to fix it.

after replacing coolant when i start up engine on 98 licoln town-car makes loud knoicking noise

When I start the car in the morning, the van makes a humming noise which goes away after the car warms us. It gets louder when it's colder at initial start up. I have good heat and no antifreeze leak so I ruled out the water pump.

I had experienced the same problem with my 93 TC. I'll try to make it short. Replace the Idle Control Valve. Cost me $50 at AutoZone. It has a electronic plunger that has a rubber o ring on the end of it. It separates two air chambers inside the valve. When the rubber gets old and the plunger is suppose to cut off the air coming in from one chamber to the other, the air gets sucked between the chambers across the old rubber causing the humming noise. That is also why the engines revs up and down and wont idle right. It is located between the firewall and the back of the motor just to the left (drivers side) of the throttle control assembly. When you look up on the internet on how to replace it, it will tell you to remove all the housing surrounding the wiper blade control arms and assembly so that you can access it. If you take your time, just remove some of the hoses and wires connected around it and you can access it without removing all that ****. Only has two screws to it that point up and can be reached with a ratchet and extension. Car runs great now and finally got rid of that noise.

Loud rattle sound when Idling

I suggest you have your car checked as soon as possible - while a rattling exhaust isn't desperately urgent it could be the cat breaking up which might later restrict the flow of gases. Most importantly excessively loose timing belts or chains tend to make most noise when the engine is idling. If the noise is being caused by this delay could be very expensive.

MY 91" TOWN CAR SIGNATURE HAS BEEN MAKING A LOUD

hi this sounds like to me you might have a loose baffel in the box, the reason why the sound dissapates when you get to a certain speed is because the baffel is pushed up or down due to the pressure when you slow down the pressure then releases the baffel and it starts rattling again, you might also have a broken clamp on your exhaust or even a missing rubber bush check these out first...good luck

My Lincoln town car wont start. It was running fine when I parked it last night. Engine turns over ok but wont start.

I would start looking at the little things first, like fuses and relays. If their ok, then I would check to see if the fuel pump is kicking on. It ususaly will make a humming sound, for a second or two, then it cuts off.

Without more information it is hard to tell. Is the humming noise variable depending on the speed that you are driving or constant? Could be ground, radio, pulley, compressor noises hard tell.

It has to be internal. Is it your valves or a slapping piston? (Sorry but internal engine problems are hard to diagnose without tearing down the engine)

You need a new IAC (idle air control valve). They get stuck and make a loud noise when they go bad. Their design has been updated.
