Question about 1996 Chevrolet Astro

4 Answers

My 1998 Astro is having problems starting after a heavy rain of when the weather is extreemly damp. We have replaced dist. Dist cap & rotor, wires, plugs and coil. The problem still exhist, seems as far as we can denote the injectors are not priming when its wet, the fuel pressure is good at 59-66 staying at 61 when the van does start.

I had same issue on '93 astro. On mine however, it still wouldn't start with the new distributor cap, so I siliconed around it which I think filled a few small gaps in the autozone china made pos and it worked fine ever since.

Try checking the crankshaft positioning sensor, it may be getting water in the connector causing it to short out and give false readings

98 altima has trubble starting in really damp wet weather. change pulgs and wires already.

if it only does this in damp weather, its more likely its in the ignition system. if it has a distributor check the cap for moisture and cracks. if it does have a cap. spray wd-40 inside cap to displace the moisture. WD stands for water displacement. when its dry outside and engine running. get a spray bottle and fill it with water, spray the dist. cap and wires. if there is a problem the car will chug and almost stall out. if this happens, thats the problem. have a good day !!

I have a 1998 VW Golf. I have noticed that when it rains or when the car does not start. I have replaced spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, starter, battery, its been tuned, oil change. It still does...

You didn't mention distributor rotor. This part should be replaced with the dist. cap. If moisture in the ingnition circuit is the problem, try spraying entire ingnition system with WD40. This will waterproof wires cap coil and distributor.

Talked to you before. AStro van still wont start when it is damp or humid/raining outside. Mechanice has looked at it many times with no resolve. New dist. cap, rotor, coil is fine new plugs, fuel...

A real mechanic can not find the problem, and he has put his hands on it, so you are now consulting a crystal ball. I think I said before old plug wires are the most frequent cause of wet weather starting problems, you seem to have replaced everything but those. Perhaps if you had replaced those instead of everything else your problem would have been solved? I would take it to a dealer garage and ask them if they have encountered this before. It may be something they see daily and fix for less than 50 bucks.

Check your catalitic converter, you might start with an oxygen sensor first. your local muffler shop can do a temp check on the converter for you, but you can replace the oxgen sensor your self pretty easy.

1998 astro van dosent run

The distributor cap probably needs replacing. They are notorious for failing just by their design. Problem is the dealers no longer carry them so you will get an after market unit from a local auto parts dealer. Make sure it has a life time replacement as the after market units fail more often than your original GM part

these vans where kind off know for haveing problems with there dist. check the dist cap for cracks, check the coil wire also. what has happened is that mosture is getting in some where and probley the cap is at fault. when s the last time the vech has had a decent tune/up cap rotor plugs wires . replace the cap and rotor and coil wire, should solve your problem . but i would recommend looking at the other tune /up parts good luck kdc744
