I have the same problem. I found broken bits of plastic on the floor. But the button is being pushed in when the pedal is unpressed.

Theres a rubber stop on the break pedal
once they get old the crack & break
you can use a nut & blot to replace the rubber stop

Brake lights stay on all the time . Checked brake pedal switch and it closes and opens as per reading on ohm metter, brake lights continue to stay on even when I short out brake switch connector.

This is the diagram. If you disconnect the switch, do they stay on? If so, you have another circuit feeding it (i.e. new radio or alarm installed maybe?)

Emergeny brake light stays on. Hoe do I remove the consolr to replace emergency brake switch

actually barry before i pulled out the console i think i would take a long look at the pedal or lever which you push or pull to put the brake on. I'll bet you find a button switch attached to it somewhere, which completes a circuit and supplies 12 volts to a light in the console. However I could be wrong and a look through a manual could set you straight before you turn a wrench

Brake lights will not turn off on my 94 Nissan Altima

Your problem should be that the rubber stops that are mounted at the top of your break pedal came out or are worn down too much to press the buttons all the way in.
What they do is push the button that switches off your break lights when the break pedal is released (yes, kind of backwards way to design it, i know). That's why your lights stay on even when your car is off. I had to go to the junkyard to find replacements for mine and they are a ***** to replace.
They are chipped away easily by the break switches when your car shakes badly over a prolonged period of time. Like driving a couple of weeks on a bad front tire.

Brake lights stays on

You need to adjust those nuts so that it goes out. Back it off, so that switch moves away from pedal. leave some clearance, very slight, between plunger & where it makes contact. Then tighten both nuts to keep it in place. Not too much clearance, just enough that lights go out.

Nissan Altima 1995 Brake Light swith staying on

I know this is outdated but for those with this problem which i had too, it is a rubber stopper that attaches to the brake pedel itself to keep the switch depressed on my car for there is 2 switches and there is 2 rubber stops attached to the brake pedal. this being gone will cause the brake lights to stay on all the time.
