A person would be just guessing until you put some gauges on it. you can look at the compressor and hoses. when you have a leak it will leave an oily substance where the leak is.if the freon gets low the low pressure switch will shut down the system to protect it. when it sees the correct pressure it will turn on the clutch on the compressor

Have to have it leak checked, you lost
refrigerant, & no YOU can't add only to
polute the atmosphere

Recover all refrigerant & make repairs

Then pull a vacuum & recharge

Won't be cheap

Could go to $1,000

Air conditioner blows cool not cold air

- Keep the knob on RECIR and not FRESH.
- Put the air con ON, blower on max speed.
- Open the hood, inspect the inspection window glass located on the liquid line.
- If foam like bubbles are seen, charge the refrigerant gas, till the glass window is seen clear. Never overcharge the system.
- If the problem persists, check the following:
Refrigerant volume
Refrigerant pressure
Heater control base (for Hatchback)
Heater control base (for Sedan)
Air conditioning pressure sensor
Compressor and pulley
Expansion valve -
Air conditioning amplifier
ECM
CAN communication
The following diagram may help you identify the components.

Why won't the air conditioner blow air?

The very first thing you need to do is to check for fuses or say faulty fuse. Secondly check fan which starts along with air conditioner, it might be manually switched off or the fan may have been clogged. Also reason can be lack of refrigerant - charge your air conditioner with refrigerant. Last thing you need to check is cooling coil - the cooling coil may freeze if there is no refrigerant in the system.

Check the refrigerant level. When the compressor is turning, it should read between 25psi and 45 psi on the low blue side (for quick connector type a/c required by law on new cars since the early 1990s.

Is the compressor engaging? If not he needs to find if a sensor issue if its fully charged or a low pressure or refrigerant condition. You can have pressure without refrigerant.

Air conditioner on 2002 Pontiac blowing hot air, although freon is not low...also makes a clicking noise.

Take it to a garage and have them evacuate the system and refill with refrigerant. you have air and non condensibles in the refrigerant system.

you need to recharce your air conditioner system with refridgerant. you may have a small leak that depletes the system over time.
