Question about Chevrolet Caprice Classic

4 Answers

Car shakes I have a 1987 Caprice Classic sedan, 4.3L V6, with a 3-speed auto trans (R-200C). When I reduce my speed to below 30 mph, then accelerate, the car begins to shake badly. I was told by the dealer that the entire x-mission had to be replaced. One local mechanic said it may be the differential's spider gears. Someone else told me it was the torque converter.

Driveshaft was inspected by the mechanic and he said the U-joints connecting transmission to the drive shaft had no play and the rear couplings to the transfer case were ok as well.

My question to Guru is why would the problem occur at low speeds and only when accelerating. If the driveshaft was misaligned or the tires were out of balance, wouldn't the problem always occur at any speed?

I changed the transmission fluid and filter 3 years ago and the number of shavings was minimal considering the fluid had never been changed. Oddly, a few months ago when the mechanic changed the fluid and filter, he said the filter was very dirty. I didn't trust this mechanic because he charged me $175.00 to put in synthetic fluid and a new filter.

I will take it to either the dealer or a transmission specialist. Thanks emmisionwhiz.

I'm going to say that it's somewhere in the drive train. Rear differential, tranny, or stall converter, you will need a transmission shop to diagnose it. The reason for the low rmp or speed shake, is that there is a certain power range that the problem area is effected in. Say that it's in the tranny, and the second gear has a bad plate or play in it, then when you reach a certain speed with a certain amount of rmp or power behind the second gear, it will create a resonate vibration or shimmy in the problem area. When in first, third, or at a power range above or bellow the resonation of the problem area, then the problem will fade out or go away completely. This is a basic example, but it will be similar with the problem area no matter where it is exactly. So, I recommend having a transmission shop diagnose the exact problem area, then go from there.

I'm still going to recommend the transmission shop diagnostic.

I'm sorry, I didn't get to finis that. Many tranny shops will diagnose, tell you the exact problem area, and give you an estimate for free. Once you know the exact problem, then you can get other estimates.

Yes it would occur at any speed.

the dealers advice of changing entire x-mission had to be replaced.was a good advice for this problem.hence this will cost you heavy ,but this is the solution.

Check tires first, ensure it is not just a tyres balance problem.

Check tires first , tires are most common cause for car shaking, have them checked and balanced, in most cases this fix the problem.
Check that driveshaft bolt are all there, if you lose one of them you will get same vibration.
Regarding Xmission, tail shaft has to be parallel with the pinion shaft. The angles on the transmission and pinion flange must also be checked.

If the tires are misbalanced it occurrs at a certain speed only, that is normal, and it is what always happen, as balance affect more wheel stability when they are running at a certain frequency.
If it happens at very low speed, let say under 5Mph, then check that is not just a bad tyre, or you do not have a problem with the axle.
If problem is with wheel bearing you do not have shaking, and you have noise.
Check axle joint underneath the car, go to a tire fitter and have tires balanced.

    Regards

The load placed on the transmission when you accelerate is what is causing the shake, it is not tire shake/out of balance, even a badly worn U Joint will seldom cause this issue, I believe the dealer is correct, let him tear down the transmission, if he doesn't fix it then he just gave you a trans overhaul for free, ask for the exact cause of the failure once the dealer has the transmission apart, the rule is make the dealer responsible for his diagnosis of the problem, I know how this goes, I worked in new car dealers for 30 years.
