Question about 2004 Chevrolet Malibu
I have read other posts where the writers had problems with their power steering. It freaked me out the otherday when after starting the car I proceeded to drive out the driveway when the electric power steering went off. he message on the info board on the dash just said problem with power steering. I was able to back up and park the vehicle. Called Onstar and had them do a diagnostic and found no problems. Left the car and being a weekend could not get any help. My husband jumps in on Monday morn (tuesday actually - long weekend) starts up the car and drives it to the dealer with absolutely no problems. I have read that it resets itself. Can this happen while driving on the highway as I can see this a being potentially dangerous? Should I be scared and worried? The dealer did nothing to the car as basically there was nothing to do. 2004 Malibu Power steering went out with light coming on indicating power steering. Steered hard but not impossible. Looked up in owners manual and they indicated it would not hurt it to drive. Like Rogers's, it started working again the next time I drove it. It has done it 3 times now. Just before the steering went out it acted loose and jerky in the steering like the hydraulic power steering acts when it is low on fluid. Took it to dealer, they could not look at it then but told me to bring it in when it was doing it. I may go to a parts store and have the code read to see if it gives a clue. Hope it does not need to be replaced. It almost feels like it is binding. I dropped off the edge of a pavement and scraped bottom a few weeks back and I thought maybe I bent something but it worked alright at the time so I did not pursue it.
I had the same problem with my 2006 malibu lt, took the car to the GM dealer had the column replaced and a new electric motor at a cost of $875.00.
No more problems, this is a common problem with this electric

Tonight the same thing happened to me in my 2004 Malibu Maxx. I was pulling out of my neighborhood, (during a turn!) when the power steering went out. It scared me so I pulled over, turned the car off and then on, and the eps was working again, though the light stayed on. I'm taking it to a mechanic soon but am not sure what they can do! It sounds like this is quite common.

I just had the same problems with my 2004 Malibu....I was driving on a back road near my apartment going around a curve and the svc light came on and the steering was out.I had to struggle to keep it under control or I would have hit a tree.
