Question about Mitsubishi Outlander

Fuel Indicator do not reach the FULL mark, and after changing a float, now the indicator marks Full, but the needle is marking totally erroneous quantitys, since it jumps all around the indicator

    Thank you grease dog, I do really appreciate your solution. Everything you recommend was done and failure is still there, dealer has asked to change a print board..??, I will wait to see how things go, but I will certainly appreciate any further ideas from you

When you replaced the sending unit in the tank you have to make sure the indicator, that goes up and down, touches the indicator pad. in other words, make sure it tight.

How to adjust gas gauge to read right not reading way over filled like it does now. When 1997 chev 350 vortec truck gauge is at 1 st red mark close to empty, better not past gas station ! ! !


the fuel level sender is inside the fuel tank, part of the fuel pump assembly. did you or was the tank replaced before??they may have bent the float arm on reassembly . you can buy the sender from your parts supply store .you will have to drop the tank to do this it clips onto the side of the pump assembly. run it almost dry first as the tank is big n very heavy even 1/4 full. you can try to bend the old arm

but its very hard on the "sender" as for level indicator full to empty, think of the shape of the tank narrow at top to widest point in the middle (full to half) wide middle to narrow bottom( half to empty)

its just an overall volume thing

I have a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis Ls with a fuel gauge that does not work (gauge may be reversed)??? help please.


The fuel level indicating system is a magnetic type system, which consists of the sending unit located in the fuel tank, an anti-slosh module located on the back of the instrument cluster, and a fuel gauge located in the instrument cluster. The sending unit changes resistance according to the level of fuel in the fuel tank, which varies the current flow through the gauge.The pointer position varies proportionately to the current flow. In this system, the sending unit resistance is low (22 ohms) when the fuel level is low and high( 145 ohms) when the fuel level is high. The pointer of the magnetic gauge remains in position when the ignition is turned to the Off position. On some models, an anti-slosh module is used to dampen out fluctuating fuel signals from the sender. Some vehicles are equipped with a low fuel warning indicator. The anti-slosh module will also actuate the low fuel indicator when the fuel level in the tank reaches 1/16 to 1/8 full.


Do your other gauges/warning indicators work properly with the ignition on? If not, check for power at the fuse panel/fuses.

If they do then partially remove your cluster with connector still installed and check for voltage at cluster connector and gauge. Check continuity of cluster and gauge for ground.

Sometimes the anti-slosh module (if installed) goes bad in the Grand Marquis but not likely.

Sender troubleshooting:
  1. Perform test with resistors as follows:
    1. Disconnect wiring connector at sender unit, then connect resistor between gauge lead and a suitable ground.
    2. Turn ignition switch to On position.
    3. With 145 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Full mark.
    4. With 22 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Empty mark.
  1. Perform test with fuel sender of known quality as follows:
    1. Turn ignition to Off position.
    2. Disconnect wiring connector from sender and connect it to test sender.
    3. Move float rod away from fuel filter against Full stop position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or above the Full mark.
    4. Move float rod toward fuel filter against Empty stop position. Turn ignition switch to Off position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or below the Empty mark. If gauge works properly replace sender, which involves dropping fuel tank.

My kia sportage fuel gauge never goes to the full mark after i full the tank all the way up,it only reads just after the half mark. what gives?


Fuel gauge float in the FUEL tank seems to be misaligned or already damage! Bring it to ur nearest garage mechanic to take a look at it! Taaah!

According to AutoZone, if you have the full floating axles they have to come off to get the drum off. The semi-floating axles are easier--if you have those you just need to back off the adjuster as I explained. Reach a thin screwdriver into the hole in the back above the axle. It might have a cap over it or a "punch out." You need to turn the star (slightly visible in attached pic) in I think the up direction several turns to get past the lip in the drum. It will resist turning as it ratchets in the opposite direction. You should be able to tell if you're going the right direction as the drum should get looser.




Removal & Installation

Full Floating Axles
To remove the drums from full floating rear axles, the axle shaft will have to be removed. Full-floating rear axles can be identified by a bearing housing that protrudes through the center of the wheel.
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel Axle shaft Retaining ring, key and adjusting nut Hub and drum

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub and drum to the tube Adjusting nut Key and retaining ring Axle shaft and wheel

Semi-Floating Axles
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the hub and remove the wheel.
  3. Mark the relationship of the drum to the hub and pull the drum from the brake assembly. If the brake drums have been scored from worn linings, the brake adjuster must be backed off so the brake shoes will retract from the drum. The adjuster can be backed off by inserting a brake adjusting tool through the access hole provided. In some cases the access hole is provided in the brake drum. A metal cover plate is over the hole. This may be removed by using a hammer and chisel.

To install:
  1. Align the mark on the drum to mark on hub and install drum
  2. Align the mark on the wheel to mark on drum and install wheel
  3. Adjust brake lining as needed. Pump brakes

03 maxima fuel guage problem, gauge doesn't show the accurate fuel in the tank, it read full and it doesn't come down the 1/4 mark if the car is running, if you turn the car off it comes down to the rest...


I have an 03 Maxima doing the same exact thing. I changed the fuel pump, with has the filter built in. It's located under the back seat. You don't need to remove the tank from this car, thankfully...It was easy. 4 bolts, basically..

As far as the gas needle, it's still floating.. My last car always had a check engine light that drove me nuts. I'd rather deal with that, than a floating needle....


I do have problems with my wiring, I can tell. Where do I begin on replacing this?? Under the dash?? Any safety measures? Lol. Thanks. :)

GMC 1997 Sierra Fuel gauge needle does not read full, it hovers on 1/4 or empty even when it's topped off. Could it be the float?


yes it probanly is
The reading for a good working float is 8 ohms when placed at the full mark

Fuel guage is not working on my 95 GMC Yukon it points past the full mark and it started when my fuel pump was replaced.


BINGO ! ! The fuel indicator mechanism is IN the fuel pump assembly (in the gas tank). Apparently the mechanic that did the work did NOT hook up the wiring harness OR the float is jammed. Go back to who ever did the work and COMPLAIN.

Gas needle does not go to full when you fill up


you must open the fuel tank and pullout the sensor which is mostly a float with a variable resistance and recalibrate it . so i think you shoul see a mechanic
