Question about 2000 Ford Focus

1 Answer

When the truck is in idle it is really rough. Now we changed all of the spark plugs and wires but it still is doing it. And when you get up to different rpms it starts too do the same thing until you put your foot on the gas and accelerate.

How do I do the carb cleaner trick to find the leak.and what is an EGR?

  • rosesofnight Aug 25, 2008

The year is a 2000 V6 3 liter. Where is th base of the throttle and the intake at?

  • rosesofnight Aug 25, 2008

And what am I spraying and onto what?

  • rosesofnight Aug 25, 2008

    And it is an automatic.

  • rosesofnight Aug 25, 2008

Now the truck isnt doing it anymore it sounds like it is running great. And then sometimes it does that rough idle. But it seems to be random. So cleaning the egr will make it stop doing that?

  • rosesofnight Aug 26, 2008

Well we did a diagnostic on it and I guess that it is just spark plug #3 is missing. And the fuel is running too lean. I know how to fix the spark plug but not the fuel problem.

  • rosesofnight Aug 29, 2008

How do I get the wire on spark plug #3 to stay in place over the spark plug? It keeps coming loose and the space to reach to it is a very tight spot to get your hand into do you have a solution? Because the truck is still missing.

  • rosesofnight Sep 01, 2008

i did a tune up had it dionostic done and it read that my #3 cylider is miss firing so i went and got a some new wires and replaced it and it still ackes like its miss firing .im thinking it maybe running to lean and if thats the case how do i fix that ?

  • rosesofnight Sep 01, 2008

could the problem be my fuel filter?

  • rosesofnight Sep 03, 2008

So are you saying that it is my fuel filter or no. Do you still think that my fuel is running to lean. I just dont understand why the diagnostic says that spark plug #3 is misfiring if I fixed that already. If I fix the egr valve do you think it will fix it.

  • rosesofnight Sep 03, 2008

But do you think that is the egr like you said in the first place. And how hard is it to swap out the injector. And who do you go to for a compression test. So when you squeeze the line what are you wanting it to do. Thank you so much for your help. Sorry I am just not good at fixing engines.

  • rosesofnight Sep 15, 2008

So we replaced the egr valve, fuel filter and even put a new spark plug in #3, and the truck is still doing it. But one thing is that when we took out the spark plug that we had put in just weeks before, it was all black. Could it be the pcv that is bad?

  • rosesofnight Sep 15, 2008

How hard is it to fix an injector and how much does it cost?

  • rosesofnight Sep 15, 2008

    What about a pcv valve?

  • rosesofnight Sep 16, 2008

How hard is it to fix the injector?

  • rosesofnight Sep 16, 2008

Ya the rest of the spark plugs are fine. But this one wasnt and this is the one that the diagnostic said was misfiring.

  • rosesofnight Sep 16, 2008

How do I know if the compression is good?

Your truck is going into a lean fuel condition could be caused by a dirty or bad EGR valve or a vaccume leak. you can use the carb cleaner trick to find the leak.

what you are looking for is a vacuum leak so when you spray the intake and base of the throttle body the idle will change when you hit the leak. just give quick squirts and listen to the engine idle.
the egr valve return exhaust to the intake . for more info on the egr i need model year and engine and trans information

the egr on a 2000 ford ranger is to the right of the air breather - follow to
the end and /you will see two 10 m/m nuts that holds it on and then there is a
larger bolt on the back side / take off the larger nut off first then the 10 mm
bolts / note you may need to spray some pv blaster on all the bolts before
taking off any/ take off the larger bolt off first and then the smaller ones
also / make sure you clean out port after takeing egr off / use round brass
brush to clean out port.this will allow your computor to reset off on engin
    check light

spray the carb cleaner around the top part of the engine just hit it all in sperts

yea the EGR just gets stuck and most people want to sell you a new one for $200-$300. i have had great luck just cleaning them.

if it has a vac leak it will run lean also the egr will cause the same thing

take the end of the plug wire and if you have an old spark plug stick it in the end of the wire. we need to find out if it just pushes in hard or the metal connection is loose ive had bolth happen to me. if too loose take the plug out and gently squeeze it tighter with a pair of pliers and test your plug again.
    good luck

the problem in me believing that its a fuel filter is. your problem is staying in one cylinder. fuel pressure should effect every cylinder, and if your one cylinder is weak that would be the first effected. fuel filters are cheep and that should be one of the very first thing done when you do a tuneup.

  • paul erickson
    paul erickson Sep 03, 2008

its all about testing . if you havent put in a fuel filter that is waht you need to do . that is one of the first things a person does on a tune up so all these other test can not tell you what is wrong if you dont have good fuel pressure. i would check the fuel pressure with my gages after i replaced the fuel filter. you check your fuel pressure and if low you squeeze the return line to check to see if the pump is able to make more pressure. if the pressure railses than your fuel pressure regulator is bad. all that done you changed coils and plugs and the miss is still at #3 then you have to swap out your injector . and if that doesnt fix the problem . you need to do a compression test on your engine to see if you have internal damage.

black is a over fuel condition maybe a bad injector

  • paul erickson
    paul erickson Sep 15, 2008

im sure its not the pcv
the injector should cost around $60

  • paul erickson
    paul erickson Sep 16, 2008

all you can do is replace them .
now did you day that just the one plug is black?

  • paul erickson
    paul erickson Sep 16, 2008

if that injector was leaking fuel that would cause a rich condition and fuel foul the plug . my next step would be to replace that injector as long as the compression is good

  • paul erickson
    paul erickson Sep 16, 2008

you will need a compression guage that will screw in where the spark plug goes

I have a Kia Rio 2005 Cinco( 5 door) Running really rough until I push down gas pedal,,, Then it seems lOk still a little r bogged down', It doesn't stall just runs rough without accelerration? Oxyg

To begin with, is your "check engine (CE)" light on? If it was on and now its not, you need to replace the bulb. If CE lights is on, find out the codes before doing anything. If bulb is good and "CE" does not come on, begin with: (1) gapping spark plugs, (2) replace spark plug wires (if haven't changed them within the last 2), then the coil. If your Cinco is still idles rough, adjust gas pedal until idling smoothly. If this still doesn't help, replace your two oxygen sensors. If still running rough, the converter. After doing all this and problem is still present, take it to a mechanic you trust.

Idle rough in gear

Definitely the plugs too. If the wires are many years old, good to change them. If they are the original wires, definitely change them.
Also new gas filter, and new air filter.

Have the spark plugs and wires been changed? If yes then are the spark plug wires routed and loomed up correctly? If not check for exhaust damaged wires.

You have two coils on this engine. Test each wire for spark with the engine running. You'll find at least one wire not sparking. replace the coil that has the wire that's not sparking.

When running at a stop the idle gets really low like its going to die but it doesn't and here lately it runs really rough at any steady speed it feels like it hesitate the motor has 204,000 miles on it

do a compression test on the cylinders. If that checks out ok,change the spark plugs wires cap and rotor. The idle air valve on the throttle body could be working incorrect causing a low idle.clean the throttle body with a cleaner spray.

Did you properly gap the plugs when you changed them? Improper spark will cause really rough idling at low RPM like that.
