Check out all info on Edmunds.com There should be a detailed list if you wanna go by the book. If youre wanting to keep it simple just do the major items

Replace trans fluid and filter
Have gear oil checked in rear-end and transfer case
oil change (preferred synthetic and performance filter)
air filter (high performace)
spark plugs and wires
have ball joints and u-joints checked and entire undercarriage greased
change all o2 sensors (helps with mpg)

That should be penty good enough for another 20k miles before major check up. Stephen

I have a ticking noise coming from what I believe to be the crankshaft angle sensor. It goes in where the distributor use to go on the right side of the engine block. Is there anything special about...

No special rules or tools to replace. If you get a used part you will need to get a spacing shim that sticks to the end to correctly space it to the flexplate. Otherwise a new one should just unbolt and go right back together.

Does my 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee really need a tune-up as preventative maintenace at 39,000miles?

No it does not need a tune up in regards to spark plug wires and ignition related components at 39,000 miles, however air cleaners, and pcv valves should be replaced ever 10 - 15,000 miles. The primary Oxygen Sensor should be replaced at 60 to 80,000 mile intervals and the fuel filter done no later than 100,000 miles, hope this helps.

Temperature control only puts out heat on drivers side

The digital thermal control is bad. The part usually goes out after 6 years near 80,000 miles or sooner with excessive use. The controler box behind the dials used for temp. has a spring inside which always breaks, the part is non serviceable, in other words, you can not buy the spring, you must replace the entire unit. Unfortunatly this is a dealer only part.
