Question about 1994 Cadillac DeVille

Acceleration problem my caddy has no cruise control but at around 46 mph without my feet on the pedal it speeds up by itself. i have to tap the brake just to slow it down.what's the problem here?

Buy a can of throttle body cleaner, about $3 from walmart. Take off the air cleaner, and I'm sure you will see a whole bunch of black **** inside the throttle body, where the air is sucked inside the intake manifold. With the engine off, advance the throttle with one hand, this will open the butterfly valves inside the body, and you will be able to see down the throat. It will be gummed up with black goo. You have to spray the dual throats down for about 5 seconds then take an old tooth brush and scrub gently on the moistened goo, for about 20 secs. then spray more cleaner for another 5 secs until you can see bright shiny metal. only spray for about 10 secs total. Then start the car, it will be hard to start for about 3 secs, then it will start up, let the idle stabilize, then turn it off, and repeat the process till its all shiny inside!

Alarmingly, the speedometer needle steadily winds down from 75 mph toward 50. Just as you uncurl your feet and try to accelerate back to traffic speeds, the vehicle downshifts with a lurch and abruptly climbs back to over 80 mph. So you tap the brakes and disengage the cruise control to avoid a conversation with one of the many law enforcement officers lurking behind every other billboard. Toggling the Resume switch settles things down, holding to a legal speed on both the uphill and downhill sections of the interstate. The kids in the back seat have stopped threatening to throw up, too. Then you look in your mirror 20 miles later and see the lights. Red and blue flashing lights. You're doing over 85 mph and, odds are, Smokey isn't going to believe you have the cruise set to 70. Time to find out why your cruise control has a mind of its own.
IT'S NOT A BUG, IT'S A FEATURE
Does your cruise control fall out of engagement partway up steep hills? Actually, it will normally drop out if the engine has to work too hard, mainly because after a while there isn't enough vacuum left to pull in the servo after sustained near-wide-open-throttle. You'll just have to put your foot into it. Downshifting helps. Do you have to ride the brakes on longer downhills to keep from building up excess speed? That's normal too. The cruise control only has authority to reduce engine speed to idle. It doesn't activate the brakes. Modern cars, in an attempt to improve mileage, have very tall gear ratios, low-friction engine designs, low-rolling-resistance tires and optimized aerodynamics. That long downgrade outside of town may have accelerated your '60s-era Pontiac to only a couple of miles per hour above legal. But, it may well propel your new economy car to blatantly ******* velocities unless you intervene by braking or downshifting. Does the Cruise icon on the dash light up when you turn the switch on? Duh. Check the fuse. You may need to look in the owner's manual to see which one if it's not tagged on the fuse box cover. An aftermarket cruise may have an inline fuse holder in the wiring to the controller.
If there is power to the system, the next check is the brake lights. Brake lights? Yup, cruise controls have a switch to toggle them off when you touch the brake pedal, and many use the same switch as the brake lights. If one of the brake lights has failed, the cruise control thinks the brakes are on all the time and won't come on. Same result if the switch is incorrectly adjusted or broken or jammed. Wait, there's more--if your vehicle has a manual transmission, there's a similar switch on the clutch pedal. You may need to break out a test light or multimeter to verify the function of this array of switches. These switches usually are normally closed switches, and close their contacts when the pedal is depressed. We've seen several cases of intermittent cruise control dropout caused by a brake light switch that was adjusted very tight. Any small bump would jiggle the brake pedal down far enough to toggle the brake lights on for a brief instant--long enough to shut down the cruise. Adjusting the switch to specs (usually so the brake lights come on after the pedal travels 1/2 in.) fixed it.

Cruise control notworking on a 2002 F150


cruise controls are controlled by the following switches and sensors
1 the switch itself
2-- the clutch pedal sensor or the VSS in the auto transmission
3 the brake sensor ---4-- the gear change switch or selector
5-- the engine speed sensor ( tacho)
6-- the road speed (VSS )
if 1 or a combination is not working or is outside parameters , the cruise control will not switch on
the road speed in a manual is set at around 20 mph and any less will not engage cruise control(CC)
changing gears in a manual will disengage CC
touching the clutch pedal will not allow engagement or will disengage CC
for some sensors run the fault codes

Where is the fuse for cruise control on a 2003 envoy


It is HVAC 1fuse #39 in the rear fuse block ,this powers the on/off switch for cruise control ! Fuse Block - Rear Beneath the left rear seat. What engine does it have ? 4.2 L or 5.3 l There is no vacuum involved in the operation of the cruise control ! Your vehicle has electronic throttle control .

The cruise control switches are located on the multifunction/turn signal lever.
The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the signal circuits of the cruise control switches in order to determine when to capture and maintain the selected vehicle speed. The PCM uses the throttle actuator control (TAC) module motor in order to control the vehicle speed. For further information on the TAC System, refer to Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) System Description in Engine Controls - 4.2 L.
Ignition positive voltage is supplied from the 10 ampere HVAC 1 fuse to the cruise control switch via the ignition 3 voltage circuit. When the normally open cruise control On/Off switch is turned On, the switch closes and the PCM detects a high signal voltage on the cruise control on switch signal circuit. When the normally open Set/Coast switch is pressed, the switch closes and the PCM detects a high signal voltage on the cruise control set/coast switch signal circuit. To engage the cruise control system, turn the On/Off switch On and momentarily press the Set/Coast switch. The PCM will confirm that the cruise control enable criteria has been achieved. The PCM will engage the cruise control system and record the selected vehicle speed. The PCM sends a class 2 message to the instrument panel cluster in order to illuminate the cruise control indicator. Pressing the accelerator pedal, while the cruise control system is engaged, will allow the driver to override the cruise control system in order to accelerate the vehicle beyond the current set vehicle speed. When the accelerator pedal is released, the vehicle will decelerate and resume the current set vehicle speed. The driver can also override the current set vehicle speed via the Set/Coast switch and the Resume/Accel switch. When the cruise control system is engaged, pressing and holding the Set/Coast switch will allow the vehicle to decelerate from the current set vehicle speed without deactivating the cruise control system. When the Set/Coast switch is released, the PCM will record the vehicle speed and maintain the vehicle speed as the new set vehicle speed. When the cruise control system is engaged, momentarily pressing the Set/Coast switch will allow the vehicle to decelerate at 1.6 km/h (1 mph) increments for each time that the Set/Coast is momentarily pressed, with a minimum vehicle speed of 37 km/h (23 mph). When the normally open Resume/Accel switch is activated, the switch closes and the PCM detects a high signal voltage on the cruise control resume/accel switch signal circuit. Activating and holding the Resume/Accel switch, when the cruise control system is engaged, will allow the vehicle to accelerate to a greater vehicle speed than the current set vehicle speed. When the Resume/Accel switch is released, the PCM will record the vehicle speed and maintain the vehicle speed as the new set vehicle speed. When the cruise control system is engaged, momentarily activating the Resume/Accel switch will allow the vehicle to accelerate at 1.6 km/h (1 mph) increments for each time that the Resume/Accel switch is momentarily activated, with the maximum acceleration total of 16 km/h (10 mph) over the current set vehicle speed . Momentarily activating the Resume/Accel switch, after the cruise control system has been disengaged by pressing the brake pedal, will recall the previous set vehicle speed that is recorded in the PCM.

Cruise control stop working light dont show on dash can a fuse be out if so where is it located


There are three fuse's in the smart junction box , do you know where it is ? It's under the dash panel left side ! The fuse's are F2.27- 10amp , F2.32 - 10amp , F2.17 - 15 amp . They power the speed control servo ! Maybe the control switch's on the steering wheel don't work.
A little back ground on the system ! Speed Control The vehicle speed control system consists of the following components:

  • Principles of Operation
    The speed control system is designed to maintain vehicle a set speed above 48 km/h (30 mph). After the speed control ON switch is pressed, pressing the speed control switch SET/ACCEL will activate the speed control actuator. To increase a set speed, either press and hold for continuous acceleration, or momentarily tap the speed control switch SET/ACCEL for 1.6 km/h (1 mph) acceleration increments. To decrease a set speed, press and hold the speed control switch COAST until the target speed is reached, or momentarily tap the speed control switch COAST for 1.6 km/h (1 mph) deceleration increments. When the speed control system has been disabled by tapping the brake pedal, the speed control switch RESUME can be pressed and the vehicle will return to the original set speed if the vehicle is traveling over 48 km/h (30 mph) and the speed control switch OFF has not been pressed.
    NOTE: The deactivator switch is provided as an additional safety feature. Normally, when the brake pedal is pressed, an electrical signal from the brake lamp circuit to the speed control actuator will deactivate the system. Under increased brake pedal effort, the deactivator switch will open and remove power to the speed control actuator, releasing the throttle independently of the speed control actuator.
    NOTE: The clockspring provides the electrical interface between the steering column wiring and the speed control switches in the steering wheel.
    The inputs to the speed control actuator are:
    • Vehicle speed signal
    • Speed control switches
    • Brake pedal position (BPP) switch
    • Deactivator switch
    The outputs of the speed control actuator are:
    • Speed control indicator lamp
    • Speed control actuator cable controlling the throttle position
    • Inspection and Verification
      NOTE: If any concerns are noted with the speedometer, stoplamps, or horn, address those concerns by referring to the appropriate sections before continuing speed control diagnosis.
      1. Verify the customer concern by operating the speed control system.
      1. NOTE: Any aftermarket modifications, including but not limited to those listed below, may cause the speed control to not operate correctly:
        • Any wiring or lamp modifications affecting the brake lamp operation
        • LED brake lamps
        • Non-factory installed trailer wiring
        • Radios (speed sensitive, auto mute)
        • Remote starters and alarms
        • Lighting and electrical accessory modifications
        Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage:
        • Visually inspect the speed control actuator and accelerator controls.
        • Visually inspect the speed control cable without removing it and ensure smooth cable operation. Inspect the speed control cable connection to the throttle body.

Cruise Control
Any given speed above approximately 22 mph (35 km/h) can be maintained with the cruise control by operating the lever.

  1. Accelerate and set: Lift lever briefly to set speed. Hold lever up to accelerate.
  2. Decelerate and set:
    Depress lever briefly to set speed. Hold lever down to decelerate.
    Normally the vehicle is accelerated to the desired speed with the accelerator. Speed is set by briefly pushing
    the lever to position 1 or 2. The accelerator can be released. The speed can be increased (e.g. for passing)
    by using the accelerator. As soon as the accelerator is released, the previously set speed will be resumed automatically. If a set speed is to be increased or decreased slightly, e.g. to adapt to the traffic flow, hold lever in position 1 or 2 until the desired speed is reached, or briefly tip the control lever in the appropriate direction for increases or decreases in 0.6 mph (1 km/h) increments. When the lever is released, the newly set speed remains.
  3. Canceling
To cancel the cruise control, briefly push lever to position 3.
When you step on the brake or the vehicle speed drops below approx. 22 rnph (35 km/h), for example when driving upgrade, the cruise control will be canceled.
4. Resume
If the lever is briefly pushed to position 4 when driving at a speed exceeding approx. 22 mph (35 km/h), the vehicle resumes the speed which was set prior to the cancellation of the cruise control. The last memorized speed is canceled when the key in the steering lock is turned to position 1 or 0.
Note:
If the engine does not brake the vehicle sufficiently while driving on a downgrade, the speed you set on the cruise control may be exceeded and you may have to step on the brake pedal to slow down.
As soon as the grade eases, the cruise controlled speed will again be maintained as long as the brakes were not previously applied, or the lever may be used to resume the previously set speed if the brakes were applied.

How to fix cruise control


Cruise controls can cease to engage if the clutch or brake light cruise switch are out of adjustment. If this happens, try placing you foot under the clutch pedal (if equipped) and lift up on it (toward you) and hold it while engaging the cruise. If it now works, it will likely cut out when you remove your foot from under the pedal. Check the brake pedal in an identical fashion. Adjusting the switch at the pedals can often solve he problem. Some vehicles (Honda, Acura, Ford, to name a few) have a plastic insert that mounts in the pedal arm which presses against the switch. These can become brittle and fracture into pieces. My Acura has little pieces of blue plastic on the floorboard around the brake pedal one afternoon and I noticed the cruise didn't work. It was the pieces of the insert that had come to pieces preventing the cruise from coming on. I replaced the insert and no more problem with the cruise.

I have a 2008 Honda CRV and for the life of me I cannot engage the Cruise control- I press the Cruise Button on the right of the steer wheel and nothing happens - nothing Help anyone ? Tks Nancy


The cruise-controls have 2-buttons that must be activated before it gets the car going when you remove your foot off the gas-pedal.
The cruise button is essentailly a switch that turns 'on' the cruise servo-motor that tells the sytems that you wants to use it, so it gets ready.
There are other three switches on the right-side of the steering wheel namely: resume accel; cancel; set decel.
To get your car to cruise: you must steady your speed and foot on the gas-pedal. You cannot just press the switches and expect the car to cruise. It takes about two-to-three seconds for the system to respond to a set cruising speed.
How to do it: accelerate to a speed of about 30-mph. Press the 'cruise' button on the dash first. Next you press 'set decel' button. This will turn 'on' the cruise control light on the instrument panel. Then wait a second or three and you would feel the cruise engagement. Any touch on the brake pedal will slow down the car and turns the cruise off. The 'cancel' button turns off the cruise light on the instrument panel.
If you hit the brake-pedal at any time for any reason, and you would like to continue cruising again, simply press the 'resume accel' button.
The cruise system works in conjunction with the braking system of the car. So all major parts of the braking system must be in good condition, otherwise the cruise system could shut off itself.

How to set cruise control


cruise control on your escape will work at 30 mph and up. Press 'on 'button, then press gas pedal 'til u reach desired speed, press 'set acc' and you'll be cruisen. You can also do it this way, press 'on' button, then press and hold 'set/acc' button, car will accelerate, let go of button when u reach desired speed. Putting on brakes will deactivate cruise, u can then press 'RSM' to resume speed.
