Do i need any special tool to remove and replace the hub assembly? What would an average labor time be?

You will need a hub puller. Ford # D93P-1175-B. The flate rate is for one hour.

How do i remove the front wheel hub on a 2003 honda civic?


Unfortunately the hub has to be driven or pressed out. This is usually a job that requires special tools not typically in the average person's tool box. Some people will try to pull it off with a slide hammer. That can work but you'll only be half-way there. You've still got to put it back once you replace the broken stud. One of the issues with removal of the hub is that you'll most likely have to replace the hub bearing because the inner race will be frozen to the hub shaft. Another job that'll require special tools. This is really a job for a shop. Sorry to be a downer. There are some youtube videos on-line that show this procedure. I'm confident that you can find one for your Honda. Good luck.

Need to replace 2003 corola front wheel bearings. need step by step instruction please


Removal & Installation To Remove:

  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2. Remove the front axle hub nut.
  3. Disconnect the front stabilizer link from the strut.
  4. Disconnect the speed sensor (with ABS).
  5. Remove the front brake caliper and rotor.
  6. Disconnect the tie rod end.
  7. Remove mounting bolts and nut and separate the lower control arm from the ball joint.
  8. Using a plastic hammer separate the front axle shaft from the hub.
  9. Remove the 2 mounting bolts from the strut. Remove the knuckle and hub assembly.
  10. Remove the lower ball joint from the knuckle.
  11. Remove the axle hub snap ring from the knuckle. toy_car_cor-02-04wheelhub2.gif

  12. Remove the axle hub from the hub bearing using special tool 09520-00031 or equivalent hub puller.
  13. Remove the inner race from the axle hub using special tool 09950-40011 or equivalent puller.
  14. Remove the dust shield from the knuckle.
  15. Remove the axle hub bearing from the knuckle using special tool 09520-00031 or equivalent and a press.
To Install:
  1. Install the axle hub bearing on the knuckle using special tool 09950-600020 or equivalent and a press.
  2. Install the dust shield on the knuckle with 3 mounting bolts.
    • Tighten 73 in-lb (90 Nm).
  3. Install the axle hub on the knuckle using special tool 09950-600010 or equivalent and a press.
  4. Install the axle hub snap ring.
  5. Install the lower ball joint on the knuckle.
    • Tighten the ball stud castle nut 76 ft-lb (103 Nm).
  6. Install a new cotter pin.
  7. Install the knuckle on the strut with the 2 nuts and bolts.
    • Tighten 162 ft-lb (220 Nm) (except '03-'04) 113 ft-lb (153 Nm) ('03-'04).
  8. Lift the knuckle and hub assembly over the axle shaft and into the hub splines.
  9. Install the lower control arm on the lower ball joint.
  10. Connect the tie rod end to the knuckle.
  11. Connect the stabilizer link to the strut.
  12. Install the front rotor and brake caliper to the knuckle.
    • Tighten the 2 caliper bolts 79 ft-lb (107 Nm).
  13. Install the ABS sensor if equipped.
  14. Install the front axle hub lock nut.
    • Tighten 159 ft-lb (216 Nm) and stake the lock nut.
  15. Check the axle hub backlash and run-out.
  16. Install the front wheel.
  17. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.

How technical is it to replace a front wheel bearing on a 2005 Pontiac SV6 and can I do it without any specialized tools


you will need a big socket (20 or 21 mm) and 1/2 inch drive to remove axle nut and torque wrench to reinstall. The book DOES call for a special tool to get the hub off the axle, but I have never used one before.


Removal & Installation


  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
  4. Remove the brake caliper and wire aside.
  5. Remove the brake rotor.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the wheel speed sensor.
  7. Remove the wheel speed sensor connector from the bracket by depressing the locking tabs.
  8. Remove the 3 hub and bearing assembly bolts.
  9. Install Wheel Hub Removal tool J-42129 to the hub and bearing assembly in order to remove the hub and bearing assembly from the wheel drive shaft.
  10. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the steering knuckle.

To install:
  1. Install the hub and bearing assembly to the steering knuckle.
  2. Install the 3 hub and bearing assembly bolts and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  3. Install the wheel speed sensor connector into the bracket until the locking tabs click into place.
  4. Connect the electrical connector to the wheel speed sensor.
  5. Install the axle nut to the wheel drive shaft and hand tighten.
  6. Install the brake rotor.
  7. Use a screw driver or similar tool to stop the rotation of the brake rotor.
  8. Tighten the wheel drive shaft nut to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).
  9. Install the brake caliper.
  10. Install the tire and wheel.

Replace front hub assembly.


Replacing the front wheel bearing/hubs can be a big job for the inexperianced. Briefly...
Remove tire/wheel
Remove brake caliper assembly, do not remove brake line.
Remove caliper bracket.
Remove brake rotor.
Unplug ABS sensor.
Remove the large axle nut.
Press axle out of bearing (may need special tool)
Remove the 3 bearing bolts and remove bearing.

Instructions to replace both front hub assemblys'


Difficulty Level: 6/10
(assuming average shade tree w/average hand tools and some knowledge of brakes, wheels, rotors, etc..)

This is a very common problem among these trucks, escpecially if they have higher mileage. I have replaced both of mine, and I can tell you from experience, that is is NOT going to be cheap. 1st I HIGHLY advise NOT to use Used parts for this repair. The amount of work to replace them is not worth what you will save on the used ones, and you do not know what kind of abuse the used ones could have on them.
The best price you are going to find on these (Assuming it is a 4WD) is around $205-$218 per assembly. Advance and AutoZone are going to be a few bucks cheaper than the Ford Service Dept., but Ford usually always has them on the shelf. I chose to get mine directly from Ford, this way there is no question of fit, compatiblity, or quality.
Replacing the hub assemblies is not hard, per se, providing you have the right tools and some patience. Virtually, the only specialty tools you will need are:

-A HAYNES MANUAL!!,
-The Axle Nut socket (ask Advance Auto to look the truck up and tell you what size it takes. Prob about a 36mm depending on the year),
-a large 1/2" rachet,
-a good breaker bar,
-and a wedge or chisel to separate the hub assembly from the bracket.

The remainder of the tools needed are standard and metric sockets and wrenches that you should already have (otherwise, stop here and take your truck to a mechanic!)
I HIGHLY recommend having a Haynes Manual for the truck, before you start this repair. They are $21 and THEY ARE ESSENTIAL! If you follow the repair step by step, you will be fine.

If you are too cheap to buy a $21 Haynes Manual on a repair costing over $400, stop here and take your truck to the mechanic!
This Solution I am providing, will be a summary of what the repair entails, I am only giving my "take" on how difficult the repair is.

1. Set the truck on jack stands and remove the front tires.
2. Remove the brake caliper assemblies (2 bolts), and hang them out of the way with wire or a zip-tie. (This is a good time to check your brake shoes and rotors, too. If they need replaced, now is the time. They are not that expensive, and this is a good opportunity to take care of them, IF they are worn.)
Approx. Shoes = $35 / set & Rotors = $23 / ea
3. Remove the Caliper brackets (2 bolts)
4. Hold the hub in place with a long pipe or lug nut wrench, and remove the Axle nut from the center of the Hub. (If nut is "staked", use a screwdriver, or chisel to un-"stake" it.)
5. Remove the clips holding the rotors onto the wheel studs, then remove the rotors.
6. Remove the 4 bolts from the back side of the Hub Assemblies.
7.Try pushing the drive axle toward the motor on the inside of the hub, if it doesn't move freely, you may need to get it started with a gear puller or tap it slightly with a hammer. It will not come out of the back side, but it should move a good 2" or so inside there.
(Now for the "hard" part)
7. Use your chisel or steel wedge to force between the hub assembly and the bracket. This will be a long process, because the hub (if original) will be set into the bracket good and tight! Give it time, work the chisel or cone shaped punch in one side of the hub, work it loose, then go to the other side. Back and forth, until it breaks loose. It might help to spray WD-40 down in there once you get a small gap started, and let it sit for an hour or so.
8. Be sure to take care not to damage the drive axle when removing the hub assembly.
9. Once the hub assembly is out, let the drive axle rest on the bracket, clean the inside of the bracket out and spray it full of white lithium grease. Spray grease on the drive axle shaft, and the portion of the new hub assembly that will slide back into the bracket also.
10. Line up the bolt holes on the new hub and bracket and insert the drive axle shaft into the back side of the new hub. Gently hammer tap the new hub back into place and bolt it back into place with the 4 bolts on the back.
11. Reassemble all the parts in reverse, and you are done!

Like I said, you MUST have a Haynes Manual before starting this repair. If you take your time and do it step-by-step, you should be able to do the repair yourself and save several hundred dollars in labor! Be careful and Good Luck!

I've never heard a hub make a rattle noise. A bad hub bearing will usually make a roaring or whining noise at speed and/or it will have play in it. When is the rattle noise made, over bumps, at a slow speed, at high speeds?

What does it take to replace the front wheel bearings on a 2003 Tiburon


the front wheel bearings on your car are not sold except as a front wheel hub assembly with the bearing pre-installed, they run about $100.00 each, to replace them requires no special tools, all u do is remove the wheel, the brake caliper and the brake rotor and the hub nut, then the hub just slides off, u will most likely need a very large socket for the hub retaining nut.

Kia 2001 magentis noise in front


Sounds like the bearing might be going out in the hub assembly. You can replace the bearing itself, but it takes special tools and an arbor or hydraulic press. Most folks just replace the whole hub assebbly with the new bearing already in it. Cost is just over $100. US for the part, and labor should be about one hour. it is a fairy easy DIY repair using basic shop tools. Good luck.

Replacing the front axle on a 93 subaru legacy


When I replace the axle halves, I run the Nut off till it is level with the shaft end. THen take a piece of wood and set it across the shaft and hit the wood with a hammer. Usually only takes one or two hits and pops right out.Then I remove the nut and finish removal . Hope this helps, Good luck and have a great day.

Three bolts is the easy part. You will likely have to have the old bearing pressed out with hydraulics and a new one pressed in....accordianman
