Egr help So the egr valve can be cleaned with carb cleaner? Thanks

    I found the egr and the vacuum lines. I used WD40 to clean the egr and the valve opens better now. As for the vacuum lines, I don't see any obvious leaks. They look good. The car seems to run better but it still has problems. Here are the symtoms:

    1. Runs smooth in park and ideal ,~1000 rpm.

    2. Runs rough (jumpy) when setting still in gear (drive and reverse), ~750 rpm.

    3. Runs smooth when moving and accelerating.

    4. Engine light comes on.

    I'm sure that these were the same symtoms before the plugs and wires were changed and the egr was cleaned. The car runs better but there's still something not right. Thanks for your help.

It should just unbolt. The problem is those tend to get frozen to the exhaust manifold, especially the higher mileage ones. Once you get it of, let it set in carb cleaner for awhile. If you have a flexable wire gun stock type brush, this will help aid you in this. You might even try a local machine shop for the carb solvent if you do not have any.

Want to clean egr valve myself. has anyone done

Thats simple, Just remove it, Get an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner, spray inside egr, and port where it was bolted, Not to excessive though, then take tooth brush to knock debris loose, Then spray again to insure clean.

CODE P0401 COMEING UP

I had an OBD II 401 code and fixed it by cleaning out the EGR vacuum line in the intake manifold. I removed teh EGR Valve and the set screw below it. i used a rifle cleaning brush and one length of the rod. Then I replaced teh set screw. I started teh engind and let the vacuum **** some carb cleaner through the front port hole. when it was sucking good I replaced teh EGR valve and reset the codes. That fixed it.8_26_2012_9_39_13_pm.jpg

EGR valve

You dont, carb cleaner only removes gunk, where an EGR valve is full of hardened carbon.

When stopped (car in drive) the idle drops and the engine wants to stall out. I was told I needed to replace the EGR cable?

EGR movement limited/blocked by carbon.

=====

Check for

vacuum leaks on intake manifold,

the air tube between the air filter.

intake manifold vacuum hose.

===
clean throttle plate with Berryman carburator cleaner

SEE sample picture HERE
===

Also remove carbon built up behind the EGR valve and the EGR passage tube.

===

Vacuum leak WILL offset the intended 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio.

More un-metered air (leaks) will lean out the fuel mixture.

Use small amount of Berryman carb clearer at potential air leak area will help you identify trouble spot.

At idle,just spray and listen for the RPM surge.

The in-rush of carb clearer will increase the RPM on the motor.

Record the problem spot(s) and address it later.

===

EGR carbon built up require 2+ hours to clean from start to finish.

You will need a new EGR base gasket before your start.

Locate and remove the EGR valve after the vehicle is cool down.

Carefully record the connector and vacuum line (for older vehicle) location by drawing an easily to follow diagram.

Remove the EGR valve.

Inspect the location of the carbon built-up inside the valve and the EGR passage tube.

SOAK these areas with WD-40 spary.

You will need a small screwdriver,cloth hanger and lot of newspaper and time to get this cleaning done right.

RE-SOAK the carbon and let it sit for over-night will also help.

One the last round,pass a shop vacuum of the EGR valve and the passage pipe.

Install the new EGR gasket and connectors.

Allow the vehicle to warm up outdoor to burn up any remaining WD-40.

Take it for a test drive.
