Yes but with the right shaped wrenches and tiny hands it can be done without removing the exhaust crossover pipe

I removed the air filter box and hose. I remove the hose to radiator. Lift up the small tubing above exhaust shield and slide a 1/4 inch drive socket ext with 1/2inch socket to access the top bolt of thermostat housing. Remove completely. Use a 1/2 inch ratchet wrench and from front go under housing to access lower back bolt. The bolt only has to be loosened as the housing is notched out to slide onto that bolt. I recommend removing that bolt as well. The housing must be eased out it is tight. You can use a flat screwdriver to hold the thermostat in while you jimmy out the housing.

SOURCE: Thermostat

The only hard part will be removing the exhaust crossover pipe. This piece must be removed in order to get to the thermostat housing. Other than that all you have to remove is the air cleaner box and pull the hose off of the housing. Getting to the bolts is a little tricky, but a hand do-it-yourselfer can usually find a way to get to them. I'd recommend finding a couple of long extensions once you get to that point

How to change a bad thermostat on a 2003 3.4L pontiac montana

put in a radiator flush ,run it for 20 miles it can be a blocked core in both the radiator and the heater.that should clean it. then refill with a 50/50 mix anti freeze then bleed it of air. put your heater on full .run the engine on tick over.then push in the radiator hose to push the air out of the expansion bottle cap .it is off . then refit your cap.

Get the radiator and heater core, hoses and thermostat replaced. Also replace the mixing valve if needed. A radiator shop could give you an estimate and diagnose the problem better than I can online. I hope sincerly that this helps.

How do you know the thermostat is ok? If in doubt replace it. Water pumps are a even bigger what if. Did he do a radiator flush? Cooling system flush of the engine? Cooling fans come on at what temp and go off when? Replace the engine temperature sensor? 6 years old is bound to have sensors and such go bad.

2002 Pontiac Montana Thermostat replacement

check the coolant level fiirst...if that is low it wont give you any heat.....to change the thermostat you have to follow the top radiator hose to the engine.at the send of it you will see a clamp take it loose...then you will see the thermostat housing its held in place by 2 bolts . once you remove them you have the thermostat....make sure you clean all the old gasket material off both the housing and mount.also make sure you get a new gasket.
