Have a jetta that will stall at stops but run really good otherwise, it also doesnt wanna stay runnin once ya put it in gear, but when ya do get it going it runs fine untill ya come to a stop, then it dies or seems like its struggling to stay runnin, already tried a new O2 sensor, am currently a student for auto mechanics, im going for an AAS certification, id really appreciate any and help you can provide me... thank you kindly Mr. edward Harrington
Did you check the timing? Also make sure the injectors are putting out the correct amount of fuel. By oxygen sensor I'm assuming you replaced the MAF (mass air flow) sensor? Are all the vacuum lines in good shape and is the EGR vavlve actuating correctly (they can get gunked up)? Is air getting into the fuel lines somewhere? Is the engine not getting enough air when the turbo isn't on? Maybe your intake is clogged up but this isn't extremely likely since you'd notice power loss at higher speeds. What was done recently to the vehicle that might have caused this?

These little engines(although very good little engines)have a problem with carbon build up in the intake manifold. It builds up so bad it begins to choke the engine off. The only solution is to remove the intake and soak with a good solvent over night and will generally take you a good couple of hours to clean out to get to "like new" again. Once this is accomplished, it's like driving your car new again!!
SOUNDS LIKE THE TORQUE-CONVERTER WHICH ALLOWS THE CAR TO BE IN GEAR AT A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN AND NOT STALL. IF YOU HEAR A RATTLING TRY TO FIND OUT IF IT IS COMING FROM THE EXHAUST PIPE OR THE TRANSMISSION. OR IT COULD BE A CLOGGED CATALYTIC CONVERTER. I HOPE IT IS THE LESSER EXPENSIVE OF THE TWO. pop off the distributer cap and dry it out well. Put it back on and it should work. This happened to my 97 jetta too...also if I go through large puddles at a quick speed this may happen too. There isn't good electrical contact with the moisture.
Is the check engine light on? If so I would have a scanner put on it and have the codes read.. Otherwise it may be hard to determine. It may be the vacuum actuator on the tranny. It would be good idea to have fuel pressure checked and also any vacuum hoses.
if you go under 80km the lock up swicht in the trasmission wont ingage but if you go over the lockup engage when you slow down its suppose to disengage but our stay on and when our almost stop the car kick it like driving a standard car and not pressing the clucht when you stop the car stall a quick fix it doesnt fix it but our gonna be able to drive the car open the hood on the trasmission in the front you got a scare connector remove the connector the lock up swicht wont engage car wont stall take care good lock from montreal canada pierre
