Lots of cars have a lockout that keeps you from downshifting into first at any speed over 10-15 mph - it's to keep you from inadvertently over-revving the engine and blowing it. Chances are you have trouble with it by design. If you slow to a crawl, and it goes right in, that's the case.

I have a1999 GMC Jimmy. The fuse kept blowing for the interior lights and 4X4 buttons. So i upped it to a 25 amp fuse and it was fine for a while. When the interior lights were on, and the passenger door opened, the lights dimmed to about 50%, door closed, they were back to 100%. Tonight there was smoke coming up from the passenger speaker grill on the dashboard. I took the glovebox out and the wire leading from the ''button'' on the side of the dashboard that controls the lights going on and off when the door opens and closes was melting, (the plastic coating). It kept burning all the way up the dashboard until I pulled the fuse and I guess it cut power to that wire. Why is this?
