The p0340 code is camshaft position sensor. This link will give you specific diagnostics regarding the code. There are several other videos which explain the code . You can do a search on the web " BMW code p0340" to find more information.
P0343 - Camshaft Position Sensor 'A' Circuit High InputI'm surprised Autozone didn't give you a printout of the possible causes or tell you what they were. These are possible causes but it could also be the wiring in the system too.
- Faulty Camshaft Position Sensor - Camshaft Position Sensor harness is open or shorted - Camshaft Position Sensor circuit poor electrical connection - Faulty starter motor - Starting system circuit - Dead (Weak) battery
Camshaft position sensor - Before you launch into too much make sure your system is getting good voltage - clean battery terminals, check battery and alternator is working as it should. Then look at replacing the sensor.
There are two Camshaft position sensors. The one this is for is the one by the oil dipstick on the LH side of the engine. If you replaced the other you need to replace this one as well. Both are recommended, in other words when changing one it is recommended to change the other as well.

I have a 1999 BMW 740 il My SES light came on so I hooked up my OBD code reader p0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction is what came up. so I went to the BMW parts department and bought the Camshaft Position Sensor.
I Replaced the with the new. My SES light was still on so I hooked up the OBD reader again hoping it may reset my SES light but it didn't what did happen is the OBD reader came up with the same code (p0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction) witch is what I just replaced. now I'm at a loss. I'm not sure how to reset my SES light and if I just replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor why dose it the OBD code p0340 still come up. Any suggestions?
This is a normal problem and you need to replace it asap. The camshaft position determines when top dead center compression of the #1 cylinder occurs and the convertsit into a pulse signal that is sent to the pcm , then the pcm uses it to determine the correct injection sequence.
