RPMs bounce around whenever in idle

I have a 2003 PT Cruiser. The past few weeks I have been noticing whenever the car is idling, whether in park or at a stop light, the RPMs would decrease then increase back to the normal level. Sometimes I can feel a "stutter" almost from the bottom of my car. But I don't seem to have any trouble starting it and it shifts gears easily. It has always felt a little "rough" whenever I drive it. What could be causing the RPMs to bounce like that?

the car feels as thought it is not geeting enough air / fuel when driving at low rpm's. sometimes stalls when parking.

The throttle position sensor could cause this problem. They are usually easy to replace.

Hi,this can be caused by,dirty fuel filter , vacum leaks, cloged injectors, bad spark plugs , or bad spark plug wires , you can start by adding a good fuel injection cleaner and replacing fuel filter, these are the less expensive, if nothing changes continue with the other tests. good luck........

Idle valve or a possible vacuum hose leak. check for leaks or loose connections at the intake boots from the air cleaner past the mass airflow sensor and any hoses that go to the intake manifold to see if they are old , cracked , or just worn out,, can cut 1/4 inch off the end and re attach in some cases,,, if the hose end is worn out

Hi Laura. It would seem that the electric cooling fan is not cutting in when it is meant to. Check the cooling fan fuses first, (there should be two, one for the engine and another for the AC) Take the vehicle for an inspection and a scan, asking the mechanic to take special note of the fans and sender units which control the operation. Regards John

check the idle speed .. it probably should be around 600 rpm .. if its higher then the transmission will jump ... that is probably controlled by an idle speed sensor ..
