Car dies for no reason

I have a 1994 Bonneville and the "check engine" light comes on intermittently, it recently started dying while I'm driving for no apparent reason? I have to put it into park and restart it. I have NO car knowledge but it was suggested to me that it could have to do with the fuel filter/line. It happened once while I was on the freeway going 85 MPH and it just restarted by itself while I was coasting. I don't know where to start and I don't want to get ripped off by someone - I'm still making payments on the car (bad divorce - don't ask) and am trying to figure out if it's worth putting any money into it - it has 230,000 miles on it.....I'd like to make it last one more year if at all possible. Please help.....

Had same problem...be driving along and car would just shut down...would restart OK..continued driving like this for three days...thought it was water in gas problem..took to repair shop...suspected either crank shaft sensor or Engine Control Module problem...replaced Crank sensor first because it is a more common problem...did not fix problem...replaced ECM...problem fixed...car runs fine now.

I have the same issue....stops running at low or high speeds...no reason...can restart sometimes...if it sits overnight will often restart ....just don't know how long will run...a few minutes to 2/3days...it will always turn over ....but sounds like it's not getting fuel or spark...just won't start...after several trys....173k miles on vehicle ....HELP..............only had car for a week.........can't afford to throw a ton of $$$ at it....................RL

I have a 1994 Bonneville and it to had trouble with it quiting while driving at low speed or slowing down and after doing a ton or resurch it turned out to be the EGR valve and it is a very common thing for the 3800 3.8. motor.it is expensive to replace and all the salvage yards that I went to did not have any on the motor so I had to buy one new $105 but in the end it was worth it. Until I could come up with the money I just took it off and sprayed carb cleaner in it and it would last a few weeks until it started to act up again. hope this helps every one.

Engine dies intermittently

Check the EGR valve. May have a vacuum leak of may be dirty. Use some throttle body cleaner to clean. Use a toothbrush to get carbon deposits off, The EGR valve itself might need to be replaced. Not a big job any DIY mechanic can handle it.

Bonneville wont start

Check your battery cables,, they are probably loose or corroded. Side mount batteries that hold multiple cables have this problem that occurs over an extended period of time. Cleaning the connections and retightening the hold down bolt may fix it. Sometimes a 3/8 bolt and a washer with a nut can be used to get
a more positive holding force to keep the cable tight.
