Question about 2001 Ford Focus

1 Answer

Hi,I'm hoping you can help me with my problem. I'm thinking it might be an electrical issue. (2001 Focus\Zetec\5spd\68k) It's an intermittent problem. It bucks usually at higher speeds and heavy acceleration. Sometimes in lower gears at takeoff, but anytime I accelerate hard it happens and at the same time the speedometer jumpes up 10 20 30 mph+. It always idles fine, but as soon as I step on the gas its jerky like if I was pumping the clutch. In between jumps it usually has plenty of power and most of the time I can go pretty smooth when barely touching the accelerator. Checked out some of the basic components that might be responsible, although I am not a mechanic and don't really know what to do. The engine looks very clean and well maintained. I'm hoping it's something simple. What I've done: -Checked spark plugs, they are clean and seem okay
-Used water remover for fuel tank and injector cleaner, no change
-AdvancedAP has checked for any codes and there were 0. No lights are on the dashboard
It doesn't happen in neutral when I rev the engine, nor does it feel like there is too much throttle. It seems to be getting worse, it stalled on me a couple of times. :( Someone said it might be the throttle positioning sensor, but if I take it to a mechanic I want to make sure I will eliminate the problem without having to make multiple visits. Thank you for any recommendations

The truth is those wires look impeccable. I had a mechanic friend look at it and he said he definitely thinks those wires are in great shape. As far as that goes, he wasn't able to help much just by looking at it but, unless there could be something with the wires that aren't visible to the naked eye I would think its something else.

Check for a defective spark plug wire, because they do burn out and under high demand will allow spark to "leak" from the wire to any nearby ground causing a severe "buck" or "jerking" if this information is helpful please give me a fixya rating. Oh yea always only use factory spark plug wires and apply dialeatric to all connections when you install them.

Engine missing, car jerking and juddering

you might have a bad plug wire it doesn't have to be loose you could have a hole or cut in the wire and it's not getting a good spark to the cylinder. the radio interferance tells me this might really be the problem

2001 Ford Focus troubles

I think the issue is MAF related, a MAF will not set a code most times unless the signal is lost completely, like if you disconnect it, try this, disconnect the MAF wire connector and see if the problem goes away, the PCM will go into failure mode and substitute a signal, this will of course turn on the check engine light.

Car rides rough when accelerating

The throttle position sensor could be kaput.
On the other hand you might begin by cleaning the throttle. It may be sticking. Locate where the throttle cable goes to the intake and use an appropriate spray cleaner to clean the throttle.
