Have a 1996 GMC Jimmy 4.3 liter. Jimmy runs really rough. Have changed distributer cap 3 times in a row, changes spark plugs and wires. Took off the spider as someone said to check it to see if it has gas on it, in which it didn't, but cleaned it up, put it back on, and still the jimmy runs rough. Hard to start. Am ordering a new spider next, the next step the mechanic told us is to bite the bullet and buy an actual GM distributer cap as they have seen several problems with the ones people buy from VIP, Napa, etc. What ever happened to the good old engines when one could tell what the problem was and fix it without a computer telling you what is wrong and when actuality is I haven't seen too many computers that can tell what the exact problem is to fix it. The computer says it is misfiring on 5&6...

Depending on the degree of "failure" of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve, it can cause miss fire or low power.

1995 GMC Jimmy P0172, P0300, and P1406

Code 172 is for the fuel system being too rich on bank one.
Code 300 is for a random miss, and code 1406 is for a problem with the EGR valve or sensor.
Each component would need to be tested.

Missing

engine missing could be caused by faulty spark plugs and wires, bad ignition coils, dirty fuel injectors, leaking egr valve, low cylinder compression, intake vacuum leaks.many things will cause engine to miss, first do minor fix, replace distributor cap and rotor, replace spark plugs and wires, clean fuel injectors, replace fuel filter and air filter,if this minor tune up dont help engine and engine still missing, do a vacuum test and compression test to check condition of engine.engine could be worn out have low compression by worn valves and pistons rings.

IHAVE A 1991 JIMMY GMC I HAD TUNE IT UP PUT A NEW CAP AND ROTO PLUG AND WIRE AND CHANGE THE FUSE FILTER ALSO BUT IT KEEP CUP OFF WHEN I MAKE ACOMPLETE STOP AND WHE IAM RIDE WHAT COUL IT BE.

3 most common causes for your problem are:
  1. Bad EGR (Exhaust Gas Reciculation) valve - clogged EGR will cause engine to stutter or miss
  2. Bad MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor - will also make an engine stutter when bad
  3. Bad TPS (Throttle Postition Sensor) regulates idle speed under multiple conditions.

Engine light is on and the that comes up on the scan tool is p1406

GM Code P1406=EGR pintle position error. the EGR valve pintle may not be able to move properly due to carbon deposits. It should be cleaned if possible and rechecked.

Hello: You might check the dist cap and rotor for white powder corrosion. Check the spark plug wires. Make sure wires are not against metal. If you load up the truck does it miss?

Wath P1406 Code means on a GMC jimmy 1996,

It's an egr valve problem (exhaust gas return) egr position sensor.
Take off the egr valve and turn it over and see if there is carbon build up in the ports, if there is clean it out with a pipe cleaner and a little carbon cleaner, just spray a little into the ports and clean it out. If that doesn't cure the problem, then either the sensor needs replacing, and or the egr valve.

My 1995 Gmc Jimmy has a miss in the engine?

It sounds like you need a tune up, Spark plugs and wire and cap and rotor, fuel filter and clean the EGR Valve. I'ld say the EGR valve is dirty with carbon which is common in the 95 JIMMY"S and BLAZER"S which also means the throttle body needs to be sprayed down with throttle body cleaner, not carb cleaner since it's to corrosive to the gasket on the throttle body. Keep me posted, be glad to answer any questions you may have and good luck friend.
