Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Now that you have my sound description, I have another.

I posted the details you wanted before this one. So if you read this but did not read the other. You may want to go back and find it. Or I can post it again.

Some one just looked at (should I say listened to) my car. Not sure if he's a mechanic (although I did hear an air ratchet in the background over the phone when I spoke with him, while he was a work.
He listened to it with the air on, then off. On then off, for a while.
He looked at me and said, "I'd swear it is your water pump making that sound." He also noticed a small amount of black shaved rubber from the belt on the top of the W. P. housing. I forgot to smell again to see if it still smelled. But from the looks of the fresh black dust, it probably does smell. (when I had smelled it before. I had stuck my nose close to the hood where the windshield is.) Also, when you look close while the car is on. You can see a slight wobble on the W. P. pulley. He said he saw some new wear on the belt, but I did not see that.
Sounds like if that is the case, my warranty should cover it. So why would they talk me into it being the air, and not the W.P. if it's covered? Unless it is something else they messed up, while teaching "anger management graduate Jr", how to install a pump on a disposable car.
They are lucky I'm not a large man and my Ferrari is what they messed up. (I'm thinking if I had a Ferrari I would not be taking it to Midas.)
Talk to you soon my patient friend

This is getting a bit confusing! If it is the water pump making the noise, use the 'stick listening' method described in my last post, as the H20 pump is one of the 5 (?) pulley components I want u to check, if safely possible. U shouldn't see a wobble in new pump. They could be telling u it's the compressor because they really think it is. Did u check BBB to see if they have any history of complaints? Curt

My civic ex is lurching and impedeing

Hello Kim,

Lurching and "impedeing" is not the most comprehensive
description I've ever heard.

That could describe everything including
wheels falling off... flat tires...
LOCKED UP CV-Joint... dried out oil-less manual transmissions .. to pistons sticking outside the engine block.

Perhaps you failed to pay a pile of parking tickets...
and have a wheel-lock attached? ((I'm just saying))

My best "ADVISE" would be to guide YOUR "lurching and impedeing" down to your first local muffler shop that offers FREE READING...

(FREE is a relative term) ... Have them READ your
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES... For a good starting place.

It would be WISE to know the prices of some of your "PARTS"
before you go...

Or you could relate more relevant details... year, engine displacement, tranny type... Maintenance history and
POST a better question... provoking a better answer.

Hope I'm helping!

This tip is not for any car in particular but to all the people in this community. When posting a problem, it is easier to help, when all information is given. The more detail the better. The year make and model along with the engine size and a detailed description of the problem should be supplied.

Reduced power light trailblazer

Sounds like a bad altenator. Usally accompanied by starting problems. To check the altenator, disconnect the battery while the vehichle is running, if the engine dies when you disconnect the battery, then you'll be looking at a bad altenator. If altenator checks good, then post back with a more detailed description of symptoms.

2005cobalt ls engine misfire code reads po300 changed fuel filter, plugs looked bad so changed them and took another look at them and plugs 1&4 are black and plugs 2&3 are clean

Sounds as if you may have a faulty ignition control module (ICM) or a dirty or bad conection there. The reason I say this is because the ICM controls plugs 1 & 4 and 2 & 3 and "companions" in a way. There is a few tests that can be done to check it but fixya has a limit on the size of a picture I can post here (150KB or less) and was unable to post it. Below I gave you a description of what the ICM does as well as its location and a picture of it. I would check your connection there. Normally I would say bad injectors but since the ICM treats cylinders number 1 & 4 as "companions" this is the direction I would go. If you are wanting the testing procedures, feel free to email me at csautomotivecars@att.net and I will be happy to email it to you. No there won't be a cost if you are wondering, don't mind helping just couldn't post it on here (to large of a file). Hope this helps....

Reset code for saturn

Reset code for what?

Please include the year make and model as well as a detailed description of the problem or the information you are looking for.

I'll use this analogy. What if I where to post, "how much will groceries cost this month?" I probably am not going to get a lot of responses since nobody knows how many people I need to feed or what I plan I buying.

If I post something more specific like, "What can I expect to pay for Ribeye steaks?" I am more likely to get a few responses since I have asked specifically for the cost of an item and everyone who reads it will know specifically what info I am looking for.

96 Buick LeSabre Oil Pressure issue

Well Serenity, it sounds like your car has a few problems. You are right about not driving it with the oil light on. Have it towed. The shop can scan for engine codes w/out starting the vehicle. There should be some trouble codes stored on the car's computer if the engine light went on and off. This will give your mechanic some clues as to what is wrong. Ask for the code #'s in case you have any questions later. It sounds like tranny and engine problems. Your description is quite good, lots of detail. I just read a post that said 'car won't start.' Not much to go on! It's difficult to diagnose w/out seeing/hearing/driving the car, but no details?? Anyway, when I started to read your post, I was thinking power steering pump (making the noise), until you mentioned the oil pressure issue, which points to engine lubrication issues, and probably the noise. The rpm's running a bit high before transitioning (I take that as 'shifting'), sounds like a slipping tranny, but maybe it's just part of the engine problem. Difficult to diagnose further w/out more info (codes), but it sounds like your engine may be cooked. Give an update w/ any more info or further questions. Good luck, Curt
