Question about 2000 Ford Focus
Yes it is possible but it requires removing and moving the plastic container right by the alternator, it's been a while since I did one and I can't remember if it is the power steering reservoir or the radiator expansion bottle. It's easy enough to release the container and let it hang on the hoses.
You will need some 3/8" and 1/4" drive sockets to release the bottom pivot bolt of the alternator because the engine is so close to the right hand inner wing panel.
Once you get the alternator free, I found it easier to remove the front engine mounting bolts from where they screw into the right hand chassis leg and pull the engine a fraction forward to allow you to lift the alternator out from the top, dropping the alternator down to get it from under the car really wasn't an option. The whole lot seemed to be shoe horned into the engine bay to me.
Take the engine mounting bolts out of the chassis leg and not the engine, the alloy casting of the engine is not the best I have seen and someone had butchered the one I worked on resulting in having to put helicoils in the mounting holes of the engine in order to screw the engine mounting back on.
Removing the chassis/engine mount screws will give you just enough room to lift out the alternator and you can actually pull the engine forward enough with one hand, you don't have to move the engine much and it isn't that heavy I promise.
